Oregon Claims 1-0 Victory Against Idaho
09/08/17 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon returned home and continued their momentum in a 1-0 win Friday against the Idaho Vandals. Junior forward Marissa Everett tapped in a cross from freshman Chardonnay Curran in the 59th minute to secure the win as Oregon's winning streak increased to four games.
How it Happened: Everett added to her goal tally with a tap in from her right foot after Curran and senior Abby Morrow successfully played a give-and-go. Then, Curran beat a defender with her dribbling skills and crossed the ball to Everett, sliding with her right foot beating the Idaho goalkeeper for her third goal of the season and second game-winner.
Oregon dominated play in the first half with a 10-1 shots advantage, but failed to score.
Who Stood Out: Idaho transfer Emma Eddy entered the match as a substitute and was not afraid to shine against her former team. The Eugene native from Sheldon High School played her inaugural collegiate season for the Vandals but returned home to play for the Ducks as a transfer. Eddy was not phased by competing against her former teammates, having three shots on goal in just 35 minutes played.
"It was nice to see everyone," said Eddy. "It was a little weird but the transition is fine. I love Eugene and I love the team. Also, I love the playing style this coaching staff teaches so everything is good."
Eddy admitted that she will have to continue working on her finishing in front of goal as her chances against her former teammate and goalkeeper Makayla Presgrave could have added to Oregon's goal tally against the Vandals.
Everett was also a standout for the Ducks. With two goals and one assist already, Everett was keen on adding to her tally with two shots on goal in the first half before scoring early in the second half.
"I'm ecstatic to score another goal and put my team ahead. I want to get more to help my team," said Everett.
The Canyon Lake, Calif., native followed her goal-scoring instinct, finishing what would become a great goal.
"As soon as I saw (Curran) on the other side, I knew she was going to get the cross in so I had to make my run. It was a great play by her," Everett said.
As a team, the Oregon Ducks kept possession of the ball and remained patient for a chance at goal, playing from the back four defenders and gradually advancing towards the attacking half which is a topic Head Coach Kat Mertz has mentioned previously.

"I'm proud of the effort, especially in the second half," Mertz said. Idaho came out guns blazing and we must give them credit because they put us under a lot of pressure. I thought our players responded well and they got a goal in the second half. The gritty performance in that second half is what I'm really proud of."
"It feels good to win obviously but the winning streak doesn't matter," Mertz said. "We have to focus on UC Irvine who has been playing good quality opponents. It's going to be a good game. They beat us last year and so it will be a good rematch for us."
Noteworthy: Oregon's four-game winning streak is the longest recorded since the team's five-game winning streak early last season. That was eventually stopped by UC Irvine which happens to be the Ducks' next opponent.
Jayne Lydiatt played with a bit of fire against the Vandals. Perhaps her extra motivation came from the 60 or so family members visiting from Nebraska. Lydiatt, a Colorado Springs, Colo. native, is originally from Nebraska, according to her grandmother who was in attendance. With the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team in town to play the Ducks tomorrow, Lydiatt's family came to support, dressed in apple green shirts that read: 'Nebraska Cornhuskers love Oregon Soccer.'
Up Next: Oregon Soccer will travel to California to face UC Irvine Sunday at 1 p.m. PT.
