Bruner’s Golden Goal Lifts Oregon Past Arizona
10/28/18 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. — Bayley Bruner's golden goal in the 95th minute lifted Oregon to a 1-0 overtime victory against Arizona Sunday in front of 568 at Pape' Field.
It was the third time in the last four home matches that the Ducks were stretched beyond regulation, but unlike the other two – losses to Stanford and Arizona State – the Ducks emerged victorious in this one.
"I was so happy that I don't even know if I had thoughts," said Bruner. "It was good after coming off of a losing streak. The hard times make the good times sweeter."
How It Happened: After withstanding a pair of Arizona corner kicks to open overtime, the Ducks built up a successful counterattack and eventually got the ball to Chardonnay Curran on the right half of the field about 40 yards from the end line.
Curran's pass into the box just cleared an Arizona defender's head and found Emma Eddy at the top of the 18 yard-line. Emma then slipped the ball across the center of the box to Bruner, who hammered the game-winner into the right side of the net from 12 yards out.
"I thought Emma Eddy did a great job of holding the play, setting the defender off and finding Bayley at the top of the box," said head coach Kat Mertz. "That's awesome, that's trusting your teammates. But Bayley, what a great finish, I'm proud of her."
Neither team had much success attacking the opposing back line in regulation. Duck goalkeeper Halla Hinriksdottir matched her career high with seven saves – most of the routine variety – in earning her sixth shutout of the season.
Zoe Hasenauer nearly got the Ducks on the scoreboard in 17th minute. Eddy lofted a ball behind the Arizona defense that Hasenauer ran on to at the corner of the six-yard box, but her shot rolled just wide from a difficult angle on the left side.
Who Stood Out: Hasenauer led the Ducks with five shots. Eddy's assist was her first of the year, and it moved her into a tie for the team lead in points with 13 (Marissa Everett).
What It Means: The Ducks halted an eight-match losing streak with the extra time victory, and now will play for a .500 season Friday against Oregon State.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"What a great effort by the team. I was a little concerned about what our energy might be after the result on Thursday (a 2-1 overtime loss to Arizona State). The girls fought hard, and that's what we asked them to do. Control your effort, control your fight, keep that belief and just go back to Ducks soccer."
Notable: Hinriksdottir recorded the 200th save of her career in the first half. She's just the fifth Duck to reach that milestone. … Hinriksdottir tied Amanda Fox (1996-99) for second on the UO career list with her 23rd win. Bayley's goal was her third of the season and sixth of her career. … Curran recorded her third assist of the year. … This was the fourth overtime game of the season for Oregon. … Maite Cazorla of the Ducks women's basketball team was Sunday's guest public address announcer, as the Ducks celebrated Hispanic heritage day and Día de Muertos/Halloween.
Up Next: Oregon closes the 2019 season by hosting Oregon State in the Civil War on Friday (6 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
