Everett Sparks Seniors to Civil War Victory
11/02/18 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. — Senior Marissa Everett scored two goals to lead the Ducks to a 2-0 Civil War victory over Oregon State Friday in front of 1,204 fans at Pape' Field.
Finishing at 9-9-1 overall (3-8 Pac-12), the ninth-largest crowd in school history saw the Ducks post their best season in a decade.
"When you play in the civil war, you have to throw out all statistics," said Everett. "It's about who wants it more, grit, and all out attitude. I think we came out today with all of those boxes checked; every single person wanted it, and we got the result."
How It Happened: Everett scored the game-winner from distance in the 35th minute. Freshman Zoe Hasenauer drove the ball deep down OSU's ride side before dropping the ball back to Everett at the top of the box. Everett took one touch to her left and then rifled a left-footed shot into the net from 21 yards out. It was Hasenauser's team-leading fifth assist of the season.
Everett added an insurance goal in the 61st minute. Fellow senior Bayley Bruner crossed a line drive in from the left side, and Everett tipped the ball out of the air into the net from five yards out.
"She had an unbelievable practice yesterday," said Mertz. "I was like 'okay, she's back. She's ready.' And she was. She came out here and got on the end of some and created. She worked extremely hard on the ball, but most importantly off the ball, defensively and tucking in and making runs. She just shows how special of a player she is."
Who Stood Out: Everett scored her seventh and eighth goals of the season, and 17th and 18th of her career. Halla Hinriksdottir made four saves in earning the shutout and her ninth win of the season, which ties the UO single-season record.
What It Means: The win broke a nine-season losing streak for the Ducks. The last Oregon team to post a .500 record was the 2008 squad that went 9-9-2. All nine of Oregon's seniors – Everett, Bruner, Hinriksdottir, Sofia Chambers, Kyra Fawcett, Jazmin Jackmon, Brianne Parsons, Nicole Seaman and Hannah Wilson played together in the final two minutes of the match.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"I told the team after the game that that is the way a senior day is supposed to feel and that's the way it's supposed to go. It was so awesome to get all nine of them out on the field for those last few minutes."
"I recruited these players to come in and take a chance. To do something different. To help rebuild this program. They could have gone to other programs, but we took a chance on each other. They've definitely changed the culture. Pushed this program forward. Their legacy is just the love they have for each other and this program and the sport. It's been an unbelievable process for me to watch them grow into young women and just really be comfortable with who they are. It has been an honor to work with them and have them call me coach."
Goalkeeper Halla Hinriksdottir
"As a fifth-year senior you have to take pride in your job, and I didn't have much to do other than those two saves. My backline makes it very easy on me, but there's times where things slip up and I need to come up with a save. That's honestly the least I can do because they make my job so easy."
Notable: Everett and Hinriksdottir made their mark on the UO record book. Hinriksdottir passed Amanda Fox (1996-99) for second on the UO career list with her 24th win. She finishes her career ranked tied for second in shutouts (16) and fifth in saves (141). Everett stands sixth in career goals (18), third in game-winning goals (10), eighth in assists (10), fifth in points (46) and sixth in shots (141).
On the UO single-season lists, Hasenauer's five assists rank tied for seventh. Everett is eighth in goals (8) and fourth in game-winning goals (4). In addition to the single-season wins record, Hinriksdottir's seven shutouts is also tied for first.
