GOING OUT IN STYLE
The Ducks gave their hometown fans a historic show in their final two home games of the regular season this past weekend. Oregon opened the slate with a dominant 21-8 victory over Arizona State, marking the first time UO has scored 20 or more goals since the 2015 season. The Ducks netted 17 goals in the first half, a program record, with Jill Zubillaga scoring a career-high six goals.
Oregon capped the weekend with a monumental 18-11 upset of No. 16 USC, marking UO's first win over a ranked opponent since 2008. The Ducks' seniors put the team on their back in their final game of their careers, as five seniors recorded hat tricks led by JoJo Hesketh's career-high five goals. After the Trojans scored the opening goal of the game, UO jumped ripped off the next 10 straight to close out the first half with a 10-3 lead. The Ducks rode their early lead to the 18-11 victory.
OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION
The Ducks' offense has been unstoppable over the past four games, averaging 17.5 goals per game during that span. Oregon has scored 10 or more goals in one half in each of the past four games, including a record 17 in the opening half against Arizona State. Over the past four games, UO has won by an average of nine goals per game. Senior Jill Zubillaga has been a key part of UO's offensive prowess, scoring 17 goals over the past four games, followed by junior Shannon Williams with 11 and Mariah Gatti and Natalie Modly with nine each. Eleven different Ducks have found the back of the net over the recent stretch, with sophomores Jen Lanuza and Lindsey White along with freshman Haileigh Farrell recording their first career goals.
DRAWING A MASTERPIECE
In a recent interview, head coach Katrina Dowd decisively stated what the key to upsetting USC was, "draw controls." And she could not have been more accurate as UO outdrew USC, 22-9, in the game, tying the Oregon single-game draw control record. In the past two games, Oregon has recorded 43 draw controls compared to 18 combined by Arizona State and USC. So far this season, the Ducks are averaging 14.5 draw controls per game while their opponents average 10.9. Sophomore Lexy Biller has been a major factor in UO's dominance in the circle, recording a program-record 89 draw controls so far this year.
WHERE DO WE STAND?
Heading into the final three games of the season, the Ducks sit in third in the Pac-12 standings, just barely ahead of USC based on win percentage. While UO is 4-3 (.571) in conference play, the Trojans are 5-4 (.556). If the Ducks can win two of their last three games, they will more than likely earn the No. 3 seed in the inaugural Pac-12 tournament. Oregon can only fall as low as the No. 4 seed. Even if the Ducks lose their final three games, UO would still beat Cal and ASU on tiebreakers no matter what the two teams do in their final games.
FROM DEFENDING THE NET TO SCORING IN IT
The way senior Jill Zubillaga has been playing this season, you would never guess she started her career as a defender. After being moved into an attacking role following the hiring of head coach Katrina Dowd, Zubillaga has recorded 61 goals over the past two seasons. The Kennett Square, Pa., native currently leads the team with 42 goals this season, tying Colorado's Darbu Kiernan for first in the Pac-12. She has recorded nine hat tricks this season, including the last five games. She netted a career-high six goals this past weekend against Arizona State. Her 42 goals is already tied for fifth on the UO single-season list, needing just nine more to tie Shannon Williams record of 52 set last year.
LET CAMBI ASSIST YOU
To few people's surprise, senior Cambi Cukar is once again the Ducks' leading distributor with 35 assists so far this season. Her 2.6 assists per game average currently leads the Pac-12 and ranks fifth in the NCAA. The Pleasanton, Calif., native is also fourth in the NCAA in total assists. She has dished out a season-high four assists five times this year, while recording at least three assists in five of the last six games. Cukar is already Oregon's all-time career assists leader with 159 so far in her career, good for 45 more than Shannon Propst, who is second. With her 25th assist at Vanderbilt, she is now the only Duck to appear on the UO single-season record list four years running. She holds the single-season record with 46 assists in 2016, while placing third with 42 in 2017 and sixth with 36 in 2015. She needs just 12 more assists this year to break her own single-season record.
POINTING TO A RECORD CAREER FOR WILLIAMS
Only in her junior season, Shannon Williams continues to be an offensive juggernaut for UO. After breaking the single-season points and goals scored records last year, Williams continues to contribute to the UO offense in both scoring and distribution. The Bel Air, Md., native leads the team with 54 points this season, recording 30 goals and 24 assists. She currently averages 4.2 points per game, placing her in a tie for first on the single-season list while tied for 10th on the single-season total points list. Throughout her three-year career at UO, Williams has averaged 3.6 points per game, which would rank first on the career points per game list. Williams is already seventh on the career points list with 169.
BILLER DRAWING ATTENTION
Sophomore transfer Lexy Biller has been a beast in the starting circle for the Ducks this season. In her first season with Oregon, the former Louisville player far and away leads the Ducks with 89 draw controls so far this year to break the UO single-season record. Her 6.8 draw controls per game average ranks second in the Pac-12 and 12th in the NCAA. The Ashburn, Va., native tied the UO single-game record with 10 draw controls against No. 7 Syracuse, and nearly tied it once more with nine at Vanderbilt. If she continues at this blistering pace, Biller will finish the year with more than 100 draw controls to her name, which would rank eighth on the UO career draw controls list.
READ IS A BRICK WALL IN THE NET
In her first season as a Duck, transfer Brittany Read has put up big numbers in the net for UO. At Vanderbilt, she recorded her sixth game this season with double-digit saves, finishing with 10 against the Commodores. So far this season, she has recorded 117 saves, placing her in a tie for sixth on the UO single-season saves list and in a tie for seventh on the career saves list. Her nine saves per game average leads the Pac-12.
SCOUTING THE DUCKS' OPPONENTS
The Ducks have a formidable road stretch to close out the season, opening their three-game road trip at California. The Golden Bears are 5-9 this seaosn and 1-6 in the Pac-12, going 1-7 over the past eight games. The Ducks defeated Cal, 12-7, in the two squads' first meeting this season. Cal is led by redshirt sophomore Kirsten Swanson, who has recorded 30 goals and 10 assists so far this season.
Oregon will vie for yet another upset at league-leading Stanford on Sunday. The Cardinal are currently 11-3 overall and 6-1 in conference play, with their only loss in the past 12 games coming at Colorado, 18-16. Stanford currently leads the Pac-12 in goals, assists, points, draw controls and shots per game. SU has six players with at least 20 goals this season.
WORLD CUP PEDIGREE
Head coach Katrina Dowd won't be the only Lacrosse World Cup champion on the sidelines for the Ducks this year. Assistant coaches Michelle Tumolo and Becca Block both earned world cup gold this past summer, the first of their careers. The duo helped team USA go undefeated in tournament play, defeating Canada in the championship match.
LACROSSE BECOMES PAC-12 SPONSORED SPORT
With the establishment of the Arizona State women's lacrosse program, the Pac-12 was able to field the minimum number of required teams to qualify for a conference championship and NCAA tournament automatic-qualifying bid. This upcoming season, each team will play one another twice, home and away, with the first-ever Pac-12 lacrosse championships taking place in Boulder, Colo., Apr. 26-29.
