Cal Uses Early Second Half Run To Keep Ducks At Bay
04/13/18 | Women's Lacrosse
BERKELEY, Calif. – The Oregon women's lacrosse team played California to an even draw in the first half Friday evening, but an early surge from the Golden Bears to open the second period left the Ducks in a hole from which they could not fully recover, eventually falling to Cal 15-13.
How it Happened: After a back-and-forth first half that saw the Ducks (8-6, 4-4) and Cal knotted at 8-8, the Golden Bears came out firing in the opening minutes of the second period.
Cal's Caroline Corzel opened the scoring just 47 seconds into the half, recording her third goal of the game to spark a 5-0 run for the Golden Bears.
Senior JoJo Hesketh finally put a stop to Cal's run, scoring her first goal of the game to make it 13-9 at the 15:35 mark.
After another goal from Cal, Shannon Williams opened a 4-0 run for UO with senior Jill Zubillaga scoring three straight to bring the Ducks within one, 14-13, with just under 10 minutes to play.
The Golden bears then proceeded to clamp down defensively, holding Oregon scoreless for the final 10 minutes of the game. Cal's Kirsten Swanson netted one more goal, her fifth of the game, before time expired to earn the final score.
The first half was a much tighter affair between the two teams, with four lead changes and seven ties throughout the opening 30 minutes.
After trading goals, Cal eventually took an 8-6 lead with under five minutes left in the opening half. Williams scored her fourth goal of the game followed senior Natalie Modly's first at the 1:41 mark to knot the game at 8-8 at halftime.
Who Stood Out: Both Williams and Zubillaga led the team with five goals each … This marks Zubillaga's fifth straight game scoring at least three goals, and third of the season with five or more … Williams tied her season-high with seven points, five goals and two assists … Senior Cambi Cukar finished with three assists, marking her third straight game, and sixth of the last seven, with at least three assists.
Notable: With her five goals today, Zubillaga moves into second on the UO single-season list with 47 goals. She needs just four more to tie Williams' record of 51 set last season.
From Eight Meters Out: Both UO and Cal were fairly even in almost every category except free position goals. The Ducks went 2-of-9 in free position attempts, while the Golden Bears converted five of their eight attempts on the day.
Up Next: The Ducks close out their weekend road trip in California by taking on No. 12 Stanford Sunday at 1 p.m.
