Oregon Soccer Position Preview: Forwards
08/14/18 | Women's Soccer
As the Ducks prepare for Friday's season opener versus Stony Brook (7 p.m., Pape' Field), it's time for position preview number three for the Oregon women's soccer team. Today we scout the forwards.
Forward is Oregon's deepest position as the UO coaches could be able to play three or four attackers at each spot. The Ducks return the players who scored 16 of team's 21 goals in 2017 and many of those came from the forwards. All-Pac-12 senior Marissa Everett has been among Oregon leaders in goals, assists and points all three years in Eugene. She'll be joined by fellow veterans Kyra Fawcett (12 career goals), Bayley Bruner, Jessica Yu and Emma Eddy, among others, as well as some younger players who could give Oregon a different look up front.

What to watch
Head Coach Kat Mertz
"We do a lot of stuff in front of the goal. We've got to get these players feeling comfortable. You don't need that much space. The only thing that needs to see the goal is the ball. That's the important part of finding ways to have a quick trigger; finding ways to make room for yourself; finding ways to drag a defender off to create a shot for a teammate. That's some of the things we've been working on a lot this preseason."
On the season opener
"We've been waiting all year for this, since November for this opportunity. That's the one thing that I love. We only have 19 guaranteed games. So how do we make the most of that moment? How do we enjoy it? How do we get out there and play for each other and have some fun?"

What to watch
- Everett enters the season ranked among the school's career leaders in goals, game-winning goals, assists, points and shots. She led the Ducks with 14 points (5G, 4A) in 2017. She also had a pair of goals in the Ducks' exhibition win against Portland State.
- Fawcett also ranks among the school's career leaders in goals with 12.
- Everett and Bruner (2A in 2017) are among the Ducks best as setting up their teammates to score.
- Yu and Eddy may be poised for breakthrough seasons. After scoring two goals as a sophomore in 2017, Yu had a goal and an assist in the Ducks' 5-0 exhibition game against Portland State, while Eddy's score lifted the Ducks over Mexico's U-20 national team, 1-0, in the spring finale.
- The younger players to watch for are sophomore Eden Hardy and freshmen Zoe Hasenauer and Jordan Wormdahl. Wormdahl was the Oregon state 5A player of the year and showed her toughness and grit in leading North Eugene High School to the state title game in 2017. Hasenour was a prolific scorer in California who had a goal and three assists in the exhibition win against Portland State.
- The last goal against the Vikings was scored by senior Hannah Wilson, who put back a deflected shot by Hasenauer.
- One player the Ducks will miss in 2018 is senior Taylor Kuroda, who suffered a knee injury in the spring and will redshirt this season.
