Ducks Tie No. 18 Kansas, 1-1
08/26/18 | Women's Soccer
LINCOLN, Neb. — Emma Eddy's goal in the 84th minute and Halla Hinriksdottir's six saves earned Oregon a 1-1 tie with No. 18 Kansas Sunday at Barbara Hibner Field.
For much of the match, it looked like the Jayhawks' goal in the 26th minute was going to be enough as Oregon couldn't muster much of an attack. The Ducks (2-1-1) didn't record their first shot until the 67th minute of the match.
But after that, the Ducks turned the tables on Kansas (3-0-1) the final 20 minutes of regulation and finally broke through when Kyra Fawcett crossed the ball ahead to Eddy, sandwiched between two Jayhawk defenders, and Eddy scored her second goal of the season from 15 yards out.
"Emma Eddy was able to change the game with an unbelievable work rate," said Oregon head coach Kat Mertz. "Halla played fantastic and made some big-time saves."
How It Happened: Prior to Eddy's goal, Hinriksdottir kept Oregon in the match with six saves – one short of off her career high. None was bigger than the one-on-one stop she made on Kansas' Katie McClure in the 64th minute. McClure also had a one-on-one opportunity with less than three minutes to go in the second overtime, but sent her attempt wide left.
Kansas scored when the Duck defense was late to respond to a counterattack in the 26th minute and the Jayhawks took advantage for a 1-0 lead. Isabella Cavalcante sent a long pass up the middle that Kaycie Young chipped in over Hinriksdottir from 18 yards out.
The Jayhawks outshot the Ducks 19-6, but all six of Oregon's shots came in the final 23 minutes and overtime after the Ducks found their rhythm offensively.
Who Stood Out: As she did last season, Fawcett made another big impact as a late-game substitute. Just a minute after entering the match, she found Eddy for the game-tying goal. Eddy and Sofia Chambers each had two shots to lead the Ducks.
What It Means: It is the Ducks' first tie with a ranked non-conference opponent since tying No. 16 Santa Clara 0-0 in 2011.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"I'm extremely proud of our team for responding in the second half. We were a little rattled toward the end of the first half and we were able to make adjustments and play Duck soccer. It was a gritty second half performance."
Notable:
Hinriksdottir passed Cody Miles (150/2008-10) for sixth in UO career saves with 151 … Fawcett moved into a tie with Bri Pugh (2011-14) for 10th in UO career points (27) … Maja Flengsrud became the third true freshman to appear in a game for the Ducks this season … Oregon was called offsides six times, including five in the first half … The start of the match was delayed by 15 minutes due to weather in the area.
Up Next: Oregon returns to Pape' Field to host Dartmouth on Friday (7 p.m. Pac-12 Live Stream).
