Ducks Make Connections for 2-0 Win Over Dartmouth
08/31/18 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. — Making connections has been a key to success for the 2018 Oregon soccer team and Friday's 2-0 victory over Dartmouth was a textbook example of that.
Marissa Everett connected with Bayley Bruner for a goal in the first half and Eden Hardy set up Emma Eddy for a score in the second half as Oregon improved to 3-1-1 on the season.
"I liked that we scored two goals," said head coach Kat Mertz. "They were pretty nice goals. Both goals with Bayley Bruner connecting with Marissa Everett and Eden Hardy connecting with Emma Eddy – seems to be a good pair for both of them. And not giving up any, so I'll take that."
How It Happened: The Ducks took charge of the match from the opening kick, pressuring Dartmouth's defense and outshooting the Big Green 6-0 in the opening frame.
Oregon got on the board in the 18th minute on a solid build up that saw Zoe Hasenauer filter a ball up the left side to Everett. The senior from, Canyon Lake, Calif., then lofted a perfect cross that found Bruner, who tapped it home from five yards out.
"I saw Marissa get it on the flank," said Bruner. "She's amazing, so I was just trying to run my butt off and she played me a perfect ball and I just tapped it in."
The Ducks added some insurance in the 66th minute when Eddy and Hardy connected for the second time this season. Hardy went to the right corner and then turned toward the goal, drawing a trio of Big Green defenders. That left Eddy open and Hardy slipped the ball across the goal to Eddy who finished from point-blank range.
Oregon finished with 12 shots to Dartmouth's two.
Who Stood Out: The second half featured more play at both ends, with Halla Hinriksdottir making two saves to earn her second shutout of the season. Eddy scored her third goal of the year, while Hardy earned her third assist of 2018.
What It Means: Oregon remained undefeated at Pape' Field in 2018 as the Ducks look to finish strong heading into an off week.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
On how vital the extra practice between Eden and Emma has been:
"They really understand each other. That's what happens when you spend a lot of time together. It was great, the two of them linking up in the second half. Similar to how Bayley Bruner and Marissa Everett have linked up. This is their fourth year playing together. We talk about building relationships on and most importantly off the field. You definitely see that connection between a lot of our players this year."
On playing Gonzaga Sunday...
"They are a good team. The new coach up there has done a really good job. They are really organized. They are hungry. It's a rival within the Pacific Northwest. What I'm looking forward to is seeing our girls fight on Sunday and really being able to play our game, coming out here with some fresh legs and having some fun."
Senior Forward Bayley Bruner
On Sunday's match with Gonzaga:
"Sundays are when championships are won, so it'll be gritty and we have to win the physical battles."
Notable:
Hinriksdottir tied Amanda Fox (1996-99) for fourth in UO career shutouts with 11 … Everett tied Julie Armstrong (2009-11) for eighth in UO career assists with 10 … Bruner's goal was the fourth of her career and her first since her sophomore season.
Up Next: Oregon hosts Gonzaga Sunday at Pape' Field (3 p.m. Pac-12 Live Stream). The first 100 fans will get free Otter Pops.
