Huskies Edge Ducks, 1-0
09/30/18 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE — Washington's goal late in the first half held up as Oregon fell to UW, 1-0, in front of a big crowd of 1,299 Sunday at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The Ducks (7-3-1, 1-2-0) were shutout for just the second time this season.
How It Happened: After some back-and-forth play in the opening minutes, including a shot by Oregon's Marissa Everett that clanked off the crossbar, Washington (7-3-1, 2-1-0) took control and spent most of the first half in Oregon's end of the field.
Washington's 10th shot of the half broke a scoreless tie. Makena Carr got behind Oregon's defense and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Halla Hinriksdottir to Mireya Grey, who knocked it in the far side of the net from five yards out.
After being outshot 10 to three in the first half, the Ducks had a four-to-three advantage in the second half as they pressed for the equalizer.
Who Stood Out: Everett and Emma Eddy each attempted two shots for the Ducks.
What It Means: Oregon dropped consecutive matches for the first time this season.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"We did a better job of creating opportunities in the second half, but give credit to Washington for finding a way to grind out a win. It was a tough trip and we need to learn from it and get ready for a really big weekend at home."
Notable: Senior Nicole Seaman came on as a substitute in the 38th minute. She missed Thursday's game at Washington State after needing eight stitches to close a cut on her head she suffered Sept. 21 versus Utah. … Freshman Jordan Wormdahl saw her first action since the Sept. 16 Idaho match. … The only other time Oregon has been shutout this season was Aug. 24 at Nebraska (2-0).
Up Next: Oregon returns home to host top-ranked and defending NCAA champion Stanford on Thursday (5 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
