TEMPE, Ariz. – Ally Cook scored in the 16th minute and Katelyn Carter made four difficult saves as Oregon defeated Arizona State 1-0 for its first Pac-12 win of the year Sunday at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
How It Happened: Oregon (5-6-5, 1-5-2 Pac-12) scored the only goal of the match when Chardonnay Curran stole the ball from ASU (6-8-3, 0-6-2) at midfield and dribbled into the Sun Devils' third before dropping a perfectly-placed ball to Cook, who hit a sharp grounder just inside the right post from 18 yards out for her fifth goal of the season.
Then Carter and the defense went to work. In the first half, she stopped a hard shot by Eva Van Deursen in the 25th minute and then came up with the save of the game just before halftime. ASU's Marleen Schimmer got the ball behind Oregon's defense and Carter had to come off her line to make a diving point-blank block on Schimmer's attempt in the 45th minute.
In the second half, Carter made two saves in the final 8:00 to preserve the shutout. In the 83rd minute, she made a diving save on Dai Williams' shot. Then in the 85th minute, defender Alyssa Hinojosa cleared a cross off the goal line before Carter scooped up Adriana Orozco's deflection just seconds later.
Both teams had second half shots that hit the frame. In the 67th minute, Emma Eddy tipped a shot that bounced off ASU's crossbar. In the 90th minute, Callie Darst curled a shot to the far side of the net that deflected off Oregon's far post.
Who Stood Out: Carter and the Oregon defense earned the Ducks' second shutout of the season.
What It Means: The win snapped Oregon's winless streak at seven matches. It was also the Ducks' first win in Tempe since 2008 (1-0).
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"Proud of our team effort and performance today. Big-time defensive showing to get a shutout. We created a lot of opportunities and came out as the aggressor."
Notable: With one goal Sunday, the Ducks now have 26 goals in 16 games in 2019. That's the third-best effort in program history, trailing only the 2007 (28) and 2001 (27) squads … Cook has scored in back-to-back games … The assist on Cook's goal was the second of the year for Curran, and seventh in her career.
Up Next: Oregon hosts No. 7 USC Thursday at 7 p.m. (Pac-12 Networks).
