Trojans Escape Eugene on Late Goal
10/31/19 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. – No. 11 USC scored a rebound goal in the 78th minute to defeat Oregon 1-0 Thursday night at Pape' Field.
How It Happened: In a tight defensive battle throughout, the Trojans finally broke through late. Natalie Jacobs fired a shot from the left side that was saved by Oregon's Katelyn Carter, but the ball deflected to Penelope Hocking, who scored the game-winner for the Trojans (13-3-1, 6-3-0) from point-blank range.
Oregon (5-7-5, 1-6-2 Pac-12) played level with USC for much of the night. Ball possession for the game was tied at 50 percent for each team. The Trojans attempted 17 shots to Oregon's 10.
In the first half, Oregon came the closest to scoring when Caitlin Shaw banged a shot off the crossbar in the 36th minute.
Zoe Hasenauer nearly got the equalizer for Oregon in the 85th minute before being thwarted by a diving save by USC's Kaylie Collins.
"I mean, it's been challenging, but I love a challenge," said Shaw. "I think our team has risen to the occasion with every game and I think our team has come off unlucky every time."
Who Stood Out: Coming off a four-save shutout in her last outing at Arizona State, Carter was up to the test again with six saves, including one on Hocking's strike in the 66th minute that Carter got full extension on to punch the ball over the crossbar.
What It Means: The Ducks will look to match Thursday night's effort Sunday against No. 13 UCLA.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"I was really proud of our overall effort. But, it's hard, and it's a game of inches. I'm gutted. My heart hurts for the team, and they deserve a win. We will dust it off and get ready for the next game … Caitlin Shaw and Chardonnay Curran - lights out today, and we are going to need that for Sunday."
Notable: Shaw led Oregon in shots for the first time this season (four).
Up Next: Oregon honors its seven seniors on Senior Day, when the Ducks play No. 13 UCLA Sunday at 1 p.m. (Pac-12 Live Stream) Pregame senior ceremonies will begin at approximately 12:10 p.m.
