Ducks Fall at UW, 2-1
09/27/19 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE, Wash. – Emma Eddy scored for the second straight match but it wasn't enough as Oregon fell to Washington 2-1 in the Pac-12 opener for both schools on a rainy Friday night at Husky Soccer Stadium.
How It Happened: Washington (5-2-2, 1-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Eddy responded for the Ducks.
The Huskies scored first on an extremely difficult shot by Vanessa Millsaps in the 35th minute. Millsaps corralled the ball outside the right corner of the box and, shooting through a narrow window between a pair of Oregon defenders, sent a high ball into the far side of the net that Oregon goalie Katelyn Carter had no chance at stopping.
Early in the second half, the Huskies took advantage of a Duck turnover for a 2-0 lead on a goal by Kennedy Smith.
Eddy got the Ducks (4-2-3, 0-1) back in it on a score off a corner kick in the 54th minute.
Sakura Yoshida passed the ball back to Alyssa Hinojosa in the midfield who then sent a high ball into the box for Eddy, who headed it home to the right side of the net.
The Ducks' best chance at an equalizer came from Maggie Lacey's header in the 69th minute that UW goalie Siena Ruelas made a diving save on.
Who Stood Out: Yoshida's assist on Eddy's goal was her team-leading sixth of the season. The six assists are tied for third on the UO single-season list.
What It Means: Oregon's six match unbeaten streak came to an end.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"It was a good team effort and we kept fighting even when we went down 2-0 and that was a positive, but obviously we need to tighten up a few things before we have another really tough road test at Colorado next week."
Notable: The Ducks played without their leading goal scorer, Jordan Wormdahl, for the second straight match … Oregon outshot Washington 8-7 … Ally Cook, Zoe Hasenauer and Yoshida each attempted two shots … Hinojosa's assist was her second of the season; the senior center back came into the year with one career assist … the physical game saw 14 fouls called on Oregon and 13 on the Huskies.
Up Next: Oregon travels to No. 24 Colorado Thursday at 2:30 p.m. (Pac-12 Live Stream).
