New-Look Ducks Take Opener
02/06/20 | Softball
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Oregon jumped out to big early lead and relied on dominant pitching before redshirt freshman Terra McGowan ended it with a two-run walk-off double in the sixth inning to give the Ducks a 8-0 win over Utah Valley in the season opener Thursday.
Jordan Dail and junior transfer Brooke Yanez combined to give up just a bunt-base hit over six shutout innings while Allee Bunker and Terra McGowan each had big days at the plate.
How it Happened: The Ducks opened the sixth inning with a Maddie Hopper pinch-hit single to right center before Bunker reached on an error to put runners at second and third with one out for McGowan. The redshirt freshman took one the other way, over the right-fielder's head to finish it off with a two-run double.
Oregon (1-0) wasted no time getting on the board in the first, batting around to take a 4-0 lead. After Haley Cruse worked a leadoff walk, Bunker drove her in with a single through the right side to make it 1-0. Two more runs came across courtesy of an error and a Jasmine Sievers sacrifice fly before Mya Felder picked up her first RBI as a Duck with a two-out single that scored Ariel Carlson.
Bunker came up big again in the second inning, launching a 1-1 pitch out to left for a two-run bomb, scoring Cruse once again to make it 6-0. The Ducks had some opportunities in the middle innings, including the fourth inning when McGowan doubled with one out to put runners at second and third, but they couldn't capitalize.
Oregon pitching dominated all night long, with Dail and Yanez (1-0) combining for nine strikeouts while allowing just three baserunners all game, with no runners advancing past second.
Box Score Notes: Bunker and McGowan each went 2-for-4, with Bunker driving in three and McGowan finishing with two RBIs … Felder turned in a strong Oregon debut, going 2-for-3 with an RBI … Cruse worked walks in each of her first two plate appearances and came around to score both times … Rachel Cid went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored … Oregon went 4-for-9 with runners in scoring position and 4-for-6 to lead off innings.
On Deck: The Ducks will pay at doubleheader Friday starting with BYU at 4 p.m. PT, followed by George Washington at 6:30 p.m. PT.
