Ducks Fall in Double Overtime
04/09/21 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – Washington scored in the second overtime to defeat Oregon 1-0 Friday afternoon at Husky Soccer Stadium.
Â
After 105 scoreless minutes, the Huskies scored on a corner kick in the 106th minute.
Â
How it Happened: Oregon (5-5-4, 3-4-2) held possession in Washington's half early in both halves but were unable to capitalize as the Huskies (8-3-2, 4-3-2) then were able to build their attack and pressure Oregon's goal a number of times.
Â
The Ducks responded with some impressive efforts on the back line. In the 21st minute, Washington sent a cross on target for point-blank header, but Mia Palmer stepped in to break up that opportunity.
Â
In the 29th minute, Oregon's defenders intercepted a corner kick that was headed to the near post and Leah Freeman soared above a crowd of players to snag a cross a few yards in front of the goal. Freeman made four saves in the opening frame.
Â
The Ducks' lone shot of the first half nearly resulted in a goal. Chardonnay Curran sent a long pass up field into the box that Ally Cook was able to get a head on, but her shot bounced off the right post in the 41st minute.
Â
The second half unfolded much like the first, with the Ducks on the attack early and the Huskies late. Zoe Hasenauer collected the ball at the UW 18-yard-line in the 60th minute and wheeled and fired a shot that was wide right.
Â
After that, the Huskies reasserted themselves and controlled time of possession but Freeman kept Washington at bay. In the 66th minute, she made a tricky save on a ball that ricocheted toward Oregon's goal.
Â
In the 85th minute, Freeman got a hand on a long direct kick that was sailing toward the net, and then covered up the ball on the ensuing scrum to keep the game scoreless.
Â
She helped send the game to overtime with a stop on a high line drive by Mary Johnston in the 90th minute.
Â
In the first overtime, both True Dydasco and Sofia Vinas put shots on goal that were saved by the Huskies. Caitlin Shaw also had a shot on frame that was blocked in the 98th minute as three of Oregon's seven shots came in the first overtime.
Â
Who Stood Out: Freeman tied her career high with her ninth save in the first minute of the second overtime. Cook attempted a team-high three shots.
Â
What It Means: Oregon has allowed one goal or less in 13 of 14 games this season.
Â
Notable: Jordan Wormdahl returned to the pitch after missing the last game and a half with an injury.
Â
Â
Quotable:
Head coach Graeme Abel:
"We never capitalized and built on the first 15 minutes of the game. Washington was able to get themselves into the game. Then it became a scrappy game and we were never able to regain control."
Â
Up Next: Oregon plays its final road game of the season Sunday at Washington State (1 p.m., Pac-12 Live Stream).
