Four More Wins in TTU, UW Finales
01/28/23 | Track and Field
The Ducks also collected seven top-10 performances in program history.
EUGENE, Ore. – Between efforts at the Texas Tech Open and UW Invitational, the Oregon track and field team closed out its weekend with seven top-10 program marks and four wins. Among the highlights was an improved school record by Jorinde Van Klinken who reset her own record in the shot put. Saturday's winners' circle also included Elliott Cook (800m/UW), Izzy Thornton-Bott (mile/UW) and Lexi Ellis (triple jump/TTU).
Van Klinken became the first UO woman to eclipse 60 feet in the shot put, doing so twice with measures of 18.47m/60-7.25 and 18.55m/60-10.5 during Saturday's series. With the result, she lengthens her lead in the NCAA this season. Van Klinken, the No. 6 indoor performer in collegiate history, has now thrown beyond 18 meters 12 times during her career.
In Saturday's competition, she led a 1-3-4 finish for the Ducks with Jaida Ross and Mine De Klerk in third and fourth, respectively. Ross posted a day's best of 17.26m/56-7.5 on her second attempt and De Klerk established an indoor best of 16.75m/54-11.5 to move to fifth on the program's top-10 list.
Cook, on the heels of Friday night's DMR anchor duties, returned to the track to record a lifetime best of 1:46.93 and win the 800 meters in Seattle. With the performance, he established a new meet record for the UW Invitational and knocked more than a second off his previous best (1:47.95) set last year. Cook is now the fourth on UO list and joins Charlie Hunter, Andrew Wheating and Elijah Greer as the only four to dip below 1:47 in program history.
The Ducks' first win in Seattle came from Thornton-Bott in the mile. An All-American this past season in cross country, Thornton-Bott powered her way to a time of 4:34.10 and the No. 7 spot on the UO top-10 list. Her time was the fastest by a UO woman since fellow Australian Jessica Hull set the school record in 2019 (4:31.03).
Thornton-Bott, Maddy Elmore and Nicole Louw all finished in the top 10 of Saturday's mile. Having run the anchor leg of Friday night's DMR, Elmore crossed in a time of 4:38.46 for fifth while Louw (4:44.68) finished ninth overall.
Freshman Klaudia Kazimierska made her 800-meter debut for the Ducks and turned in a time of 2:05.43 which makes her the 10th-fastest indoor performer in Oregon history. She was one of three UO women to run sub-2:10 Saturday, along with Mia Moerck (2:06.93—season best) and Ella Nelson (2:09.80).
Back at the Texas Tech Open, Lexi Ellis got out to 13.50m/44-3.5 on her first attempt and held on for the victory in the triple jump. The measure puts Ellis inside the top five of this year's NCAA qualifying based on jumps entering the day. The winning mark is just off Ellis' indoor lifetime best of 13.56m/44-6 from the 2020 season.
Jadyn Mays was the top collegian in the 200 meters, and second overall, after lowering her indoor best to 23.04 and moving to No. 6 on the Ducks' career list. She entered the day with a previous best of 23.18 from the season opener two weeks ago. Mays finished behind professional Madoundou Kone (22.92) of the Ivory Coast.
Mays also registered a season best Friday when she ran 7.19 in a third-place showing over 60 meters.
In their final event of the weekend, the UO women turned in a season-best time of 3:34.69 in the 4x400-meter relay. The team of Ella Clayton, Shaniya Hall, Katriina Wright and Jordyn Blake combined to take more than five seconds off her season-opening time (3:39.80) from two weeks ago. Both Hall (23.78) and Blake (25.51) posted PBs in the 200 meters earlier in the day.
Tori Sloan, already No. 7 at Oregon in the high jump, strengthened her hold on the spot with a 1.77m/5-9.75 clearance. She entered with a previous indoor best of 1.75m/5-8.75 from last season.
