Ducks Drop Finale, Settle For Series Win Over No. 7 Stanford

Oregon was undone by 10 walks surrendered in a 6-4 loss on Sunday.
EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon settled for a weekend series win over No. 7 Stanford after dropping the finale on Sunday, 6-4, before 1,351 fans at PK Park.
After two dominant starts in a pair of wins to open the series, the Ducks (24-10) were undone by a season-high 10 walks Sunday. Two came with the bases loaded, helping the Cardinal rally back from an early 4-0 deficit.
"You don't win many games when you walk 10," UO head coach Mark Wasikowski said.
The Cardinal entered the weekend tied for first place in the Pac-12, and Oregon was fifth. The series win moved the Ducks into a tie for fourth with USC at 9-6, 2.5 games behind first-place Arizona State. The Sun Devils open a three-game series at PK Park beginning April 28, with the second game of the series to be played following Oregon's spring football game in Autzen Stadium.
"It was a good weekend; you can't throw the entire weekend out over today," Wasikowski said. "You won two out of three off of a very good team. And so it was a good weekend. We had a chance to make it a great weekend, and we just didn't play good enough today to do it."
How It Happened: Command was an issue for the UO pitching staff from the start, with freshman Leo Uelmen walking three straight with one out in the first inning, before striking out the next two hitters.

In the bottom of the first, Colby Shade reached on a one-out bunt single before Drew Cowley walked. Sabin Ceballos followed with his ninth home run of the season, and Oregon led 3-0.
Uelman pitched around another walk in the top of the second. The Ducks made it 4-0 in the bottom of the inning when Bryce Boettcher hit the second home run of this career — and his second this week.

Oregon could only play with fire for so long, however. After an error allowed Stanford's leadoff batter to reach in the third, Uelmen walked his fifth batter of the game. Matt Dallas was summoned from the bullpen and walked the next two hitters, forcing in a run. A sacrifice fly and an RBI double cut the UO lead to 4-3.
Stanford tied the game in the fifth with a leadoff homer. A walk and a single to lead off the top of the seventh ended the day for Dallas (4-1), and both runners eventually scored when UO reliever Austin Anderson allowed a hit and two walks while retiring just one hitter.
Grayson Grinsell came on and got the Ducks out of the seventh down 6-4, and the only runner he allowed in the eighth reached on an error. Josh Mollerus pitched around a single in the ninth, giving him 18 scoreless innings in 14 appearances this season.

Notable: The Ducks homered in the first inning for the sixth time this season, and Ceballos did so for the third time — all in April. … Ceballos was 5-for-12 with two homers, a triple, three runs and six RBIs in the series. … Sunday's game was his 11th of the season with multiple hits and also his team-best 11th with multiple RBIs.
Quotable:
UO head coach Mark Wasikowski on if the rotation could look different next week
"We'll talk about all that kind of stuff in our meetings and come up with a plan. Yeah, we'd like to see a better start. We got two great starts on the weekend and then one not-so-great start, and it's disappointing."
UO head coach Mark Wasikowski on the status of injured starter Isaac Ayon
"Oh, he's gonna pitch this year for us. He just day-to-day right now. He actually does throw (Monday). He's coming back, and we're looking forward to getting him back. He's day-to-day."
Up Next: The Ducks play at Portland on Tuesday before opening a three-game series at California on Friday.
