Ducks Find Redemption in Overtime Win
04/08/23 | Women's Lacrosse
EUGENE, Ore. — One week after falling in overtime to Pac-12 rival Colorado, Oregon found itself on the opposite end of a familiar situation to defeat UC Davis, 13-12.
The Ducks (4-7) found themselves in a two-goal deficit with under 3:30 left to play in regulation but stormed back behind efforts from Morgan McCarthy and Haley Taylor. Oregon held on long enough to stoke any last push in regulation from the Aggies before McCarthy put a close to Saturday's game with her fourth goal of the day.
"It is great to win and beat a really good opponent," head coach Chelsea Hoffmann said following the conclusion of the overtime contest. Resiliency has been a point of emphasis for the Ducks throughout the season and was displayed no brighter than on today's stage. "We talked about it, and that needed to be the focus; continuing to be resilient. This is a testament to our leadership and our athletes' characters. They went back to the drawing board and talked about continuing to be tougher mentally, and that's ultimately what the resiliency came out of," said Hoffmann.

How it Happened: After just over four minutes of scoreless action, the Aggies (7-4) opened the scoring with a goal by Lauren Hart. Despite a pair of goals in the first from McCarthy, the Oregon defense was unable to fend off an early offensive surge from UC Davis and found itself down 5-2 after the first 15 minutes of play.
Taylor led the charge for the Ducks' offense in the second period with her 10th goal of the season. Oregon continued a theme of versatility with five different UO players finding the back of the net. Senior Alyssa Wright netted her 10th goal of the season, while Anna Simmons finished with two points in the quarter after scoring a free position goal and her first career assist to Lauren Rismani on a fast break opportunity. The Ducks' assertiveness before the half led to a time game at seven goals apiece.

Gabby Cleveland added herself to the scoresheet to kick off the second-half scoring. The sophomore and McCarthy pace the Ducks in goals with 25 on the season. Rismani tallied her third point of the day for her second consecutive game with multiple goals to cap off the third-period scoring for Oregon. UC Davis goals from Tokushige and a buzzer-beater from Cosand tied things up before the fourth.
The fifth goal of the year from Haley Cummins gave the Ducks a one-goal advantage just over two minutes into the final stretch of regulation. However, the Aggies responded with a three-goal barrage to grab momentum in the fourth quarter before the late heroics from McCarthy and Taylor.
Oregon lost the draw to begin overtime and gave up a would-be game-ending goal to UC Davis, but a procedural infraction cost the Aggies their sole opportunity. After fending off multiple defenders, McCarthy drove toward the crease and sealed the overtime thriller.

Who Stood Out: McCarthy finished Saturday with her fifth hat trick of the season and ninth in her career. Rismani added her fifth three-point game of the season, now possessing a team-leading 15 assists. Maggie Flynn had her fifth career game with three-plus turnovers, and Margot Hotham matched a career best with six ground balls.
Notable: McCarthy is now tied for ninth in program history for draw controls with 114 … Flynn had her first game with multiple caused turnovers as a Duck and now has nine in her career … Eight different players scored goals for the Ducks … Oregon claimed its first OT victory since a 12-11 victory over Canisius in 2018 … The Ducks played in consecutive overtime games for the first time in program history, marking the fourth season of competing in multiple OT contests and first since 2018.
Up Next: Oregon will be back home Friday, April 14, to host Arizona State in its final weekend of home action.
