Ducks Drop 1-0 Decision
09/07/23 | Women's Soccer
Oregon continues to seek a breakthrough after dropping a heartbreaker Thursday to California Baptist.
EUGENE, Ore. — A frustrating start to the season continued Thursday for the Oregon soccer team, which remained winless through six games and suffered a third straight one-goal loss, this time by a score of 1-0 to California Baptist at Papé Field.
The Ducks (0-5-1) nearly scored in the opening minute but ultimately were held scoreless for the fifth time in six games this fall. A potential game-tying penalty kick in the 88th minute also didn't find the back of the net.
"It's not good enough," UO coach Graeme Abel said. "At the end of the day, (if) you want to wear that jersey, you want to wear that name across your chest, well then that comes with a price. And it's not shown in terms of words, it's shown in terms of actions. And all of us, we need to start showing those actions."
How It Happened: The Ducks nearly got out to an early lead in the opening minute. A clearing attempt by the California Baptist keeper didn't reach midfield, and Oregon played it back toward the Lancers' goal. Callan Harrington collected a pass and got off a sharp strike, but a point-blank save was made.
A few minutes later, freshman Cameron Bourne played the ball up the left side to Ajanae Respass, but again the UO shot was stopped by the opposing keeper. Though the visitors had a 20-11 advantage in shots, Oregon put more shots on goal — seven to five — but couldn't break through.
Oregon keeper Maddy Goldberg kept the game scoreless at halftime, making four saves in the opening half. But in the 61st minute, a shot that was first deflected by a UO defender and then by Goldberg as she attempted to push the ball over the crossbar fell back down in front of the goal, where Marcella Brooks was waiting to head it in for a 1-0 lead.
The Ducks' best chance to tie it came in the 88th minute, when they earned their first corner kick of the night. A foul as the set piece unfolded resulted in a penalty kick, but a low, hard shot to the right side of the net by Alice Barbieri was saved to keep the score 1-0.
Notable: Respass led the Ducks with three shots in the game, and was one of three Ducks to put two shots on goal. … Bourne and Harrington also did so; Bourne leads Oregon with seven shots on the season. … Defender Anna Phillips made her 42nd consecutive start.

"It's a hard pill to swallow. But I think we know that we're just a really talented team and we see it out there; we're also a really young team. … We just need to click together. And I think once we click, I think then we're gonna have a successful season."
UO coach Graeme Abel on how the Ducks can break through
"There's assignments to follow and there's things that need to be done, and there's certain players that are turning up for us week in, week out, and doing the job — and they're some of our most inexperienced people on the field. And they need help."
