Winning Streak Ends at No. 3 Penn State
10/04/24 | Women's Volleyball
Senior Michelle Ohwobete had a team-high 10 kills in Friday’s road loss.
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The No. 11 Oregon volleyball team had its 11-match winning streak snapped Friday with a three-set loss to third-ranked Penn State. Michelle Ohwobete posted a team-high 10 kills but collectively, the Ducks hit a season-low .075 against the Nittany Lions. With the loss, Oregon is now 11-2 overall with a 3-1 mark in Big Ten play.
Ohwobete was the Ducks' steadiest offensive option Friday, hitting .350 in the match to go along with those 10 kills. It was her fourth time reaching double figures this season. She also had eight digs, three blocks and an ace. Onye Ofoegbu and Noemie Glover had seven and five kills, respectively. Mackenzie Morris tied for the match lead with 10 digs.
How It Happened: With the score tied at 9-all in the first set, Penn State (14-1, 4-0) put together a 4-0 surge to take control of play. The home team began to pull away and eventually led 19-11. The Ducks couldn't get closer than five points the rest of the way. Ofoegbu saved a set point with her second kill but Penn State's Jess Mruzik tallied the final kill for a 1-0 match lead.
Mruzik led all players with 16 kills. She and Ohwobete were the only two players in double figures.
The Nittany Lions carried the momentum into the second set and led 6-1 after an ace. Already down a set and facing a 12-9 deficit in game two, Oregon responded with a four-point push of its own. A block by Glover and Colby Neal tied the set and Sophie Gregoire followed with a kill for a 13-12 lead. It was the team's first lead since 8-7 in the first.
However, Penn State answered immediately with another run of four to force the Ducks into a timeout. Oregon pulled to within one four times, lastly at 19-18 on a second-contact kill by Cristin Cline but Penn State rattled off six of the final seven points to secure the two-set lead.
The home team turned a one-point lead into an 8-3 cushion with yet another four-point surge. Ofoegbu got a kill out of an Oregon timeout to cut the deficit to four but it was as close as UO would get for the remainder of the match. Down a handful of match points, Ohwobete put down her 10th and final kill to extend play but Mruzik found the floor to end the next rally and give PSU the 25-19, 25-19, 25-17 win.
Up Next: The Ducks are back home for a midweek match with No. 21 USC (6 p.m. PT, BTN). Oregon will close out the week Sunday against No. 25 Washington (1 p.m. B1G+), another home match at Matthew Knight Arena. Click HERE for ticket information.
