Drummond Era Opens With Big Win

Oregon beat Youngstown State on Friday, 19-8, in the first game for new UO head coach and program alum Jessica Drummond.
EUGENE, Ore. — The Jessica Drummond era of Oregon lacrosse got off to a flying start Friday night.
Playing their season opener under their new head coach, an alum of the program, the Ducks struck early and often to defeat Youngstown State, 19-8, at Papé Field. Nine players scored and seven had multiple goals, while sophomore Thayer Hubbard had four saves to hold off any hopes of a comeback by the Penguins.
Drummond was a four-year letterwinner for the Ducks from 2009-12, and is now at the helm for her alma mater.
"It feels so good to win, and to defend Papé," she said. "That was what we were talking about all week — protecting our home turf. So I'm just proud they stepped out here and knew they had to get the job done, and they did it today."
Anna Simmons, Rachel Pallo and Haley Cummins each scored three times Friday, Lauren Rismani had two goals with three assists and Morgan McCarthy had two goals with two assists. Emma Ing and Madysyn Sweeney also scored twice, and Avery Young and Riley Taylor had one goal each.
"That was awesome," Drummond said. "We talk about team-first — everyone contributes, everyone has an opportunity. And I was just really proud that everyone took advantage of their moments on that field today."
How It Happened: McCarthy, Oregon's leading scorer last spring, picked up where she left off by scoring in the first minute Friday. Rismani and Cummins also scored in the first five minutes of the game, staking the Ducks to an early lead.
"That was one of our keys to the game, set the tone from the start," Drummond said. "We were wanting to be disciplined, give a lot of effort, and we were wanting to push that fastbreak. So I was proud they did that right away."
That early cushion allowed the Ducks to hold off a couple of first-half pushes by Youngstown State. The Penguins scored twice to get within 3-2, before Simmons found the back of the net for the first time. The visitors scored again, but Oregon then ripped off four in a row, including Pallo's first and the second of the night for Cummins, Rismani and McCarthy.
Two Youngstown State goals midway through the second quarter made it 8-5, when Hubbard was summoned to take over in the net. Oregon scored four more times before halftime, and also scored first in the third quarter before the Penguins finally scored on Hubbard, at which point it was 13-6.
"Lights out," Drummond said. "I was just so pumped. It can be kind of tough walking in off the sideline, but to come in and get the job done, be that spark our defense needed, was awesome."
Ing's second goal of the night opened scoring in the fourth quarter, which was played with a running clock due to Oregon's 10-goal lead. Sweeney scored her second of the night in the quarter, and Taylor capped the scoring with her first.
