Ducks Survive Five-Set Test vs GCU

No. 12 Oregon improved to 3-1 with Saturday's win (25-13, 20-25, 22-25, 25-16, 16-14) over Grand Canyon.
FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The No. 12 Oregon volleyball team fought off three match points in the fifth on its way to a 25-14, 20-25, 22-25, 25-16, 16-14 win over Grand Canyon Saturday afternoon. Middle Onye Ofoegbu led a trio of Ducks in double figures with a season-high 19 kills while hitting .621 over five sets. Defensively, Oregon registered 14.0 total team blocks and held the Lopes to a .075 efficiency.
Mimi Colyer added 17 kills and 12 digs for her first double-double of the season coupled with a career-high seven blocks. Sophie Gregoire and Noemie Glover registered 12 and eight kills, respectively, and in her first start donning the libero jersey, senior Daley McClellan had a match-high 18 digs along with four assists and an ace.
How It Happened: In the decisive frame, Oregon (3-1) led early on and held an 8-6 advantage when the teams switched ends. The Lopes stayed close and, with the score tied at 11-all, put together a 3-0 surge to grand a handful of match points. After a GCU service error, Ofoegbu put down her final kill to force a timeout.
Closing the match on a 5-0 run, the Ducks completed the late-match rally with an attack error by GCU. Saturday was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Oregon won the first three points of the match and never trailed in the opening set. The Ducks' offense generated a sizzling .444 hitting percentage in the first while the defense posted four total blocks. Back-to-back kills from Colyer and Glover gave UO a 10-point advantage at 23-13. Colyer had the set-winning kill two points later.
Redshirt freshman setter Cristin Cline dished out a season-high 57 assists and added eight digs and two blocks.
Grand Canyon (3-2) responded with a 7-1 surge to start the second but the Ducks steadily chipped away before pulling even at 14-all on a GCU attack error. The Lopes regained control to take a 21-18 lead and force a timeout from head coach Matt Ulmer. Oregon saved a pair of set points before GCU got a kill on its third opportunity to tie the match.
Despite an 8-4 start by the Ducks in the third set, Grand Canyon remained steady and eventually pulled even at 13-all. The Lopes never gave the lead back. Oregon saved three set points before GCU tallied the final point for a 2-1 match lead.
Tatum Parrott and Anaelena Ramirez led Grand Canyon with 14 and 11 kills, respectively.
The fourth set was tied 11-11 when the Ducks rattled off eight of the next 10 points to seize control of play, taking a 19-13 lead on a solo block by Glover. Oregon won the final four points of the set including two kills from Colyer to force the fifth.
Colby Neal tied Colyer for the match lead with seven blocks of her and Glover added five blocks. Behind the block, the Ducks had four players with double-digit digs with McClellan, Colyer, Mackenzie Morris at 12 and Michelle Ohwobete with 11.
Up Next: The Ducks face Central Arkansas in Sunday's finale in Fort Collins. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m. (PT) in what will be just the second meeting between the two programs, and first since 2014.
