Four-Set Midweek Win at Rutgers

Freshman Alanah Clemente had a career-high 26 kills Wednesday afternoon.
PISCATAWAY, N.J. — The Oregon volleyball team beat Rutgers in four sets (25-13, 22-25, 25-15, 25-21) Wednesday afternoon at Jersey Mike's Arena in Piscataway, N.J. Freshman Alanah Clemente accounted for 34 points including a career-high 26 kills against the Scarlet Knights. The Ducks also benefitted from 15.0 total team blocks and 10 service aces.
Clemente reached and surpassed 20 kills for a fourth-consecutive match, all while hitting .383 over the course of four sets. Along with her 26 kills, she finished the day with eight blocks—also a career high—five digs and four aces. She and teammate Valentina Vaulet tallied seven of the Ducks' 10 aces, and are still 1-2 in the Big Ten with 51 and 50 aces, respectively.
Senior setter Cora Taylor reached 4,000 career assists Wednesday with her eighth assist of the match. She becomes the ninth active Division I setter to reach that figure. Taylor finished the afternoon with 40 assists, eight digs, three blocks and a kill, and she directed the UO offense to a .292 hitting percentage. The milestone assist went to Clemente to close out the first set.
The Ducks' 15 blocks is just one off the their season high and marks their 11th match of the year with double figures. McFadden tied her career high with eight blocks against Rutgers and Iva Sucurovic had seven blocks of her own. Freshman libero Reese Sheppard continued her standout play behind the UO block, leading all players with 18 digs.
Oregon held Rutgers (11-20, 2-17) to a .079 hitting percentage in the match.
How It Happened: Holding on to a slim 10-9 lead in the first set, Oregon rattled off nine points in a row to take control of the opener. McFadden put away her second kill of the set for a 21-11 lead to force a second timeout from the Scarlet Knights. Vaulet dropped in her first ace for a 24-12 cushion, and on the team's second set point, Taylor and Clemente connected to take the 1-0 match lead.
The home team responded to win the second, thanks in part to a four-point surge in the middle of the set. The score was tied at 11-all when Rutgers took advantage of three UO attack errors to go ahead for the remainder of the set. The Ducks saved three set points, pulling to within two at 24-22 but the Scarlet Knights got a kill from Aspen Maxwell to even the match.
Maxwell and Tara Garvey led Rutgers with 13 and 10 kills, respectively.
Oregon sprinted out to a 7-0 lead in the third set and was ahead 11-1 after Clemente served up three-consecutive aces. The last of the three was her 50th of the season. The lead grew to as much as 12, first at 16-4 after Clemente and McFadden teamed up for a block. The Ducks' maintained a double-digit lead through the remainder of the set. McFadden was part of the final two blocks of the set, jumping along side Meyers to clinch the third in Oregon's favor.
The fourth set was tied twice early on but the Ducks never trailed in the frame, and went up 11-6 when Rutgers called its first timeout of the set. The lead was seven—up 16-9—after another Vaulet ace. The home team, however, began to chip away at the deficit got as close as two with UO holding on to a 20-18 advantage. Oregon responded immediately with a Clemente kill followed by a Sucurovic ace. Taylor delivered her final ace, once again to Clemente who found the floor for the win.

Notable: Clemente and Vaulet are the first Ducks with 50 aces in a single season since Heather Meyers had 60 in 2010 … first Oregon teammates with 50 aces in the same season since 1984; Sue Harbour (60 aces), Lisa Gemoya (59) and Teri Kramer (50) … with nine kills Wednesday, Meyers is now just two kills shy of 1,500 for her career … Sheppard is averaging 3.77 digs per set in the last seven matches.
