Ducks Fall to Sun Devils
02/14/25 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon women's tennis team continued its strong doubles play Friday against Arizona State, but the Ducks fell to their former conference foe 4-1 at the Student Tennis Center.
For the sixth time in seven matches, the Ducks (5-2) clinched the doubles point to begin the day. Tilde Jagare and Juliet Santitto, boasting an ITA ranking of No. 54, took down their second straight ranked foe with a 6-2 win over the 56th-ranked duo of Karin Altori and Sara Svetac at No. 2.
"I'm proud of how we competed today against a really good team," UO head coach Courtney Nagle said. "Arizona State is coming off a top-15 victory and has multiple ranked players, so we knew it was going to be a tough matchup coming in."
After ASU won at No. 1 doubles, the point came down to play on court three, with Avery Jennings and Julia Visaya taking care of business with a 6-3 win. Jagare and Santitto remained unbeaten this spring (4-0), while Jennings and Visaya improved to 3-1.
"Doubles has been a big focus for us, so it was really important for us to grab that point," added Nagle. "Tilde and Juliet are playing really well right now and just won their second straight over a ranked team. We wanted to gain some momentum headed into singles against a really talented lineup."
With a singles lineup featuring two top-50 players, Arizona State (4-2) won four singles matches to clinch the match. Jagare and Santitto were in a third set when the match was clinched.
Marjorie Souza and Karin Young played at the top two spots and faced off against the 38th- and 45th-ranked players, respectively, falling in straight sets. The Sun Devils also picked up points at Nos. 3 and 5.
Through seven spring matches, Oregon's doubles teams are a combined 14-5, while boasting a 22-11 singles mark. The Ducks hit the road for a pair of matches in California next weekend, visiting UC Davis on Friday (1:30 p.m.) with a stop at Saint Mary's on Saturday (11 a.m.).
