Chris Mackey
- Title:
- Volunteer Coach
Chris Mackey
is in his second season as a volunteer assistant coach with the University of Oregon soccer program. He brings a wealth of knowledge to the position - having prep, collegiate and professional soccer experience in the United States and abroad.
Mackey, a native of Eugene, Ore., started his college soccer career at Concordia (Ore.) University where he played his freshman and sophomore campaigns. He helped the Cavaliers to regular-season and conference tournament championships in 2000 and 2001, earning all-conference recognition in both seasons.
Mackey spent the 2002-03 academic calendar in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, where he participated in the Tahuichi Soccer Academy. Playing the center-midfielder position, Mackey earned the club's Outstanding Player Award for that year, eventually moving on to play for the Tahuichi club team.
He returned to the U.S. the following year and enrolled at San Jose State University. Mackey played two seasons for the Spartans, helping them to a regular-season and conference tournament championship in the 2003 season. He was named the team's Defensive Most Valuable Player in both the 2003 and 2004 seasons - playing every available minute at the center back position in those years.
In 2005, Mackey received invitations to work out with both the Seattle Sounders and the San Jose Earthquakes. His professional playing career was derailed by injury during that tryout period.
He played his prep soccer at Sheldon High School, then coached by current UO assistant Mac Wilson . Mackey was recognized as all-conference and team MVP at SHS. He played club soccer for McKenzie United (now known as Oregon United), leading them to a pair of state championships.
Mackey is pursuing a career in coaching and as an emergency medical technician (EMT).
