Soccer Wins Overtime Thriller at OSU
10/10/03 | Women's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore. (10/10/03) - The University of Oregon women's soccer team polished off one of its most dramatic wins in history Friday, returning from a 3-1 first half deficit to win 4-3 in overtime in the eighth edition of the Civil War Sponsored by Your Northwest Dodge Dealers.
'Our intensity level wasn't where it needed to be early,' Oregon head coach Bill Steffen said, 'and we gave them some goals we shouldn't have. Lindsey (Werdell), Nicole (Garbin) and also Mary (Etter) really helped get the team back into it during our halftime talk, and we just took it one goal at a time. Mele asserted herself all game long, and her winning shot was a truly great run with a natural touch on the shot. Nicole was also rewarded for her hard work with a goal that wasn't easy since they made her take the kick twice - and she still made it both times. Dom played a second solid half and made better judgments to help keep us in it.'
Oregon State got on the board early with a goal at 3:18 by Tessa Baker off an assist by Stacey Mescher, with Baker scoring again unassisted at 25:21, on a rebound off a scrum in front of the goal.
The Ducks answered with their first goal three minutes later at 28:12 on redshirt freshman Andrea Valadez's third goal of the season, a header set up by a header attempt by sophomore Carlie Ashcraft. However, OSU, pushed out to a 3-1 lead several minutes later on a goal by Lindsey Beem from the top of the box on a pass by Brianna Monk.
Down two goals with only a half remaining, senior Lindsey Werdell and Nicole Garbin took matters into their own hand and each scored on their second penalty kick goals of the season at 61:54 and 76:35, respectively, and forced matters into overtime. Less than three minutes into the extra stanza, sophomore Mele French netted her third goal of the season at 92:25 from 18 yards on an extended run through two defenders, and was set up by Garbin.
"When I saw the ball go to Nicole, I immediately started running and went through two defenders and I caught them off-guard," French said. "Then, the keeper took two steps out then immediately backed off. Then I knew I had a shot since I had scared her and she stayed on the line. At the end, I didn't want them to take me out, because I felt something good was going to happen, and I'm glad I could play my part after having to miss last year's game because of a hamstring injury."
Oregon was led in shots by forwards Mele French and Nicole Garbin (7) and shots on goal by Garbin (4) who tied French's previous season high against Texas A&M. Garbin's goal and assist moved her up the career list for goals (fourth, 10), while she took sole possession of third place all-time in assists (9). Duck goalkeeper and sophomore Domenique Lainez ended with three saves in 92:25 of work.
Despite the narrow final outcome, the Ducks held healthy advantages in shots (28-11) and allowed only one shot in the second half, to go along with a 13-2 edge in corner kicks. OSU held a 8-3 advantage in saves and 23-13 edge in fouls.
"(The win) It was definitely a good way to start the Pac-10 schedule," Garbin said. "We knew it was going to be a tough game, but one we could win. Based on our previous season results, we knew we were fairly evenly matched. The team looked at today as the start of a new season. We're concentrated on getting the results in the games we should win, and battle it out in the other games when maybe we're not favored. We still know we can play against any team in the league if we play well and together."
Individually for OSU, Tessa Baker and Janelle Joy each had three shots, and Baker led in shots on goal. Goalkeeper Melissa Onstad ended with eight saves and four goals allowed and played the entire contest.
Oregon's four-goal output tied its season best from its early home win over Boise State (4-1) and is only the fourth time in school history it has scored four goals against a conference opponent (4-0 at Washington State, 11/11/01; 4-0 at Oregon State, 10/16/99; and 4-2 vs. Arizona, 10/30/98).
The win raised Oregon's overall season record to 7-5 and 1-0 in the Pac-10, and OSU fell to 4-7-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference. The win also upped Oregon's lead in the eight-season series to 5-2-1, with a 3-0-1 mark in Corvallis.
Oregon's seventh win of the season also tied its second-highest total ever after going 7-11-1 in 1999, while their best-ever mark (8-8-2) came in 2001.
'It was a fairly amazing turn of events today,' Oregon head coach Bill Steffen said, 'but the team came together and wouldn't go down. Oregon State is a good team and they're going to win some Pac-10 games this year, and they didn't roll over and die.'
Looking ahead, the Ducks have the rest of the weekend off from competition, before traveling to a pair of 2002 NCAA veterans - Washington State, Fri., Oct. 17 and Washington, Sun., Oct. 19.
