Ducks Soccer Outshoots Huskies, But Still Falls 2-0
10/19/03 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE - Even without two of its top players, the University of Oregon women's soccer squad still outshot No. 13 Washington before suffering a disappointing 2-0 loss Sunday at Husky Soccer Field.
Because of red cards the previous game at Washington State Friday, the Ducks played without captain Lindsey Werdell and top scorer, sophomore Nicole Garbin, yet still outshot the Huskies, 14-8, and also held a sizable 8-2 advantage in shot on goal.
However, UW capitalized on both shot on goal attempts, the first on a header by Jaime Carstensen from eight yards out on the left side at 22:36, on an assist from a corner kick by Melissa Bennett. Washington added an insurance goal at 46:35 when leading scorer Tina Frimpong slid a 15-yard shot past Oregon keeper Domenique Lainez after a 15-yard run fed by Kelley Schweighart. Frimpong's goal was her 10th this season, and Bennett's assist was her 28th career-wise and broke a school record.
"Today was very frustrating because we played very well at times," Oregon head coach Bill Steffen said, "and better than UW as far as number of shots on goal and shots - unfortunately we just didn't connect on them. The players made a great effort to raise their play because of the absence of Nicole Garbin and Lindsey Werdell. It was a great thing to see, and it was frustrating that they weren't rewarded for it. Hopefully they will still get something good out of it. Individually, Christine Mintz and Kelly Baird did a good in back, Erin Engelhardt continued to impress, and in a new role today, and Sabrina DeMonte was one of several others that stepped up and did good things."
Oregon's best scoring chance came in the 81st minute when sophomore forward Mele French blasted a point-blank shot that was cleared off the line by a UW defender.
Offensively, the Ducks were led in shots by redshirt freshman Andrea Valadez (5), and shots on goal by Valadez and sophomore forward Mele French (3). Sophomore goalkeeper Domenique Lainez did not record a save in her 90 minutes of action.
Washington's Jaime Carsetensen and Tina Frimpong tied for the Husky lead in shots (2) and shots on goal (1). Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen made her second career start for the Huskies and recorded her second shutout thanks to eight saves.
The win gave Washington it's first conference win (8-4-3, 1-2-1), and dropped Oregon's record to 7-7-0 and 1-2-0 in league action.
Looking ahead to the upcoming weekend, the Ducks welcome another pair of vets from last year's NCAA tournament to Pape' Field - Stanford on Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 pm, and No. 21 California on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 1 pm.
