Oregon State Wins Soccer Civil War, 3-0

EUGENE - The University of Oregon women's soccer team lost its annual Civil War battle with rival Oregon State, 3-0, Friday night at Pape' Field in Eugene.
Although the sideline ref had raised his flag as if to signal an offsides call just before halftime, Beaver Alyssa Blackwell was still credited immediately after with a shot and goal off a Duck deflection at 41:26 on a shot to the right side of the net from 20 yards center.
OSU scored twice more in the second half - at 63:29 by Courtney Carter from 15 yards center to the top right side (on an assist by Courtney Carter), and at 71:15 by Kelli Washburn off a corner kick by Jen Crump.
Sophomore forward Andrea Valadez and junior Carlie Ashcraft led the Ducks in shots (2), and four Ducks had single shots on goal. OSU's Kelli Washburn led the visitors in shots (3) and shots on goal (3).
In goal, Oregon redshirt junior keeper Domenique Lainez had three saves in 90:00 of duty, and OSU counterpart Melissa Onstad had four saves. The San Bruno, Calif., native Lainez entered the game tops in the conference in saves this season (61), and Onstad ranked fifth (45).
Team-wise, Oregon held advantages in shots (9-8), corner kicks (4-3) and fouls (17-10), and OSU held a 4-3 edge in saves.
"We have to figure out how to get the ball in the net," Oregon head coach Bill Steffen said. "To score goals you need to be confident, to be confident you need to score goals - we're kind of in that chicken and egg situation right now. They've gotta respond and have to create things ... We just gotta battle until somehow we find a ball in the back of the net. The first goal is always the hardest."
Friday's outcome lowered the Ducks' season record to 3-9-1 overall and 0-3 in the Pac-10, and the Beavers improved to 7-7 overall and 1-2 in the league. All-time against OSU, UO now stands 5-3-1 in the in-state clash since 1996. The Ducks beat OSU in Eugene in 1996 (2-1) and 1998 (3-0), tied in 2000 (2-2), and lost in 2002 (2-1). In Corvallis, the Ducks won in 1997 (3-1), 1999 (4-0) and 2003 (4-3 OT), and lost in 2001 (4-1).
Looking ahead, the Ducks play Washington State at home, Friday, Oct. 22 at 7 pm, then host top-10 Washington, Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1 pm.
