
Softball Forces Second Contest Versus Seminoles With 1-0 Shutout Today

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ? For the second straight season, the University of Oregon softball team has advanced to the final game of the NCAA Regional tournament, defeating No. 1 seed Florida State, 1-0, Sunday afternoon to force a second game with the Seminoles. The Ducks improve to 42-20 overall while Florida State falls to 60-10 overall. The winner of the second game ? beginning at approximately 12:35 p.m. PDT ? will advance to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
Junior Ani Nyhus threw her third shutout of the tournament to improve to 25-12 this season and 4-0 at the regional while Jessica van der Linden (27-7) gave up just two hits in the loss. The Ducks got their first runners on in the fourth inning after van der Linden walked Beth Boskovich to lead off the inning. Junior Ashley then broke up the no-hitter with a single to left center to put runners at first and second with one out. Catcher Jenn Poore popped up to the catcher for the second out. With two outs, sophomore Dani Baird drove in Boskovich with a shallow single to right field to put Oregon ahead, 1-0. Florida State first baseman Beth Wade led off the third inning with a double off the left field wall and third baseman Kim Hoffer advanced her to third with sacrifice bunt. Oregon pitcher Ani Nyhus then struck out LaShaun Davis and forced a popup by leadoff hitter Veronica Wootson to get out of the inning. The Seminoles rallied again in the seventh after a leadoff single by Lesley Palmer and a sacrifice by catcher Elisa Vasquez. Shortstop Tatiana George then singled and advanced to second on the throw to the infield by Julie Jaime. With runners on second and third, Nyhus intentionally walked Wade to load the bases. The move paid off as Kim Hoffer and LaShaun Davis both grounded out to end the game.
