UCSB Shuts Out Ducks, 2-0, in Season-Opener
08/27/04 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. ? The University of Oregon women's soccer team dropped its season-opening match 2-0 to UC Santa Barbara before 494 fans Friday at Pap? Field.
The Gauchos (1-0) got on the board early with a short goal by Jennifer Borcich in front of the net off a corner kick at the 10:16 mark in the first half. With just more than 10 minutes left in the game, UCSB's Allie Kueny maneuvered around two Ducks to score a left-footer from 25 yards out that hit the top of the cross bar and dropped in the corner of the net to round out the scoring.
"We kind of sat on our heels in the first half," Oregon coach Bill Steffen said. "We can't dig ourselves in a hole like that. In the second half we controlled a lot of the play and played with more composure."
Oregon (0-1) was outshot in the first half 7-2, but rebounded in the second half to take six shots compared to UCSB's five. Oregon freshman forward Kami Kapaku had the most chances, taking four shots, three of them on goal.
Freshman forward Emily Danner, a local product from Eugene's Sheldon High, finished with two shots in her collegiate debut.
"Their defense was quick and good on the ball, but it wasn't anything we couldn't break down," Danner said. "The score didn't represent our capability."
Oregon next plays host Sunday to San Diego State at Pap? Field at 1 p.m.
