EUGENE, Ore. ? Oregon's defense set a school record by holding Idaho to just one shot attempt and Nicole Garbin and Megan Watson each scored as the Ducks defeated Idaho 2-0 Sunday in front of 627 fans at Pape' Field.
The Ducks (5-4-0) broke the previous defensive mark of two shot attempts set versus Oklahoma in 1996.
"I felt our defense played well, especially in the middle with (goalkeeper) Emily Zaler, Nicole Dobrzynski and Dylann Tharp," said Oregon coach Tara Erickson. "We're pleased to get a win at home and turn momentum back in our favor.
"But I felt that we did not play up to our potential in terms of creating chances and possessing the ball," said Erickson. "We'll have to fix some things. We had moments that we connected passes pretty well, but too many moments where our timing was really off."
In the 19th minute, Allison Newton sent a perfect cross to Garbin, who headed the ball past Idaho's Anna Sandman from six yards out for the game's first goal. It was the second straight game with an assist for Newton, a sophomore from Eugene, Ore., who also assisted on Watson's second half goal.
Garbin collected her fourth goal of the season and 26th career goal. She also extended her own school record with her 16th career game-winning goal. With 67 career points on 26 goals and 15 assists, the senior from Wailuku, Hawaii, moved within two of Chalise Baysa's school record of 69 (1998-01).
"I just found the goal and went for it," said Garbin, who has registered at least one point in four consecutive games. "It really wasn't the best soccer we've played. I really wish we could have got more goals, gotten more shots off and taken more risks."
Watson's goal, which followed connecting passes from Newton and freshman Danielle Sweeney, came in the 80th minute. The freshman from Lake Oswego, Ore., beat Sandman to the left side for her first career score.
"Our midfield got involved with the offense so that was a positive," said Erickson. "Newton and Dani Oster did a nice job of getting forward and Newton kept working hard and found a way to assist on both goals."
Ashley Irish got Idaho's lone shot attempt in the 82nd minute when she kicked a high ball on net from 23 yards out that Zaler made a routine save on. It was the only save of the game for Zaler, who earned her third shutout of the season.
The win snapped Oregon's school-record six-game losing streak at Pape' Field that dated back to last season. Idaho fell to 0-11-0 on the year.
The Ducks next head to the Rose City to play Portland State Friday at 4 p.m. and the University of Portland on Oct. 1 at 2 p.m.
