Ducks Fall to No. 6 Stanford in Pac-10 Opener, 3-0

STANFORD, Calif. ? The Oregon women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of No. 6 Stanford on Friday night at the Cardinal's Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
In the Pac-10 opener for both sides, Stanford's Kristin Stannard scored a pair of goals and Morgan Redmond tacked on another score with less than two minutes left to play to give the Cardinal the victory.
Oregon fell to 7-4-1 (0-1-0 Pac-10) while Stanford remained undefeated on the season, boosting its mark to 11-0-1 (1-0-0).
Oregon's potent offensive attack could not get on track on the Cardinal's pitch, as the Ducks came into the game averaging just more than 18 shots per game but scrapped together six shots against the stingy Stanford defense. The Cardinal entered Friday night's contest having allowed just 68 opponent shots and three scores in 11 non-conference games this season.
It was the Stanford offense, however, that set the tempo for the game.
“Stanford's best defense is really its offensive attack,” said head coach Tara Erickson. “Their overall team speed is outstanding and allows them to take some risks and chances many teams can't.”
The Cardinal offense generated 17 shots on the day with 11 corner kicks.
Oregon keeper Cody Miles tallied three saves on the day and was limiting the Cardinal, who entered the game averaging 3.09 goals per game, to just two Stannard scores, before a goal with time expiring pushed the score to 3-0.
“Cody played a great game,” Erickson said. “It's too bad that the score won't show that but she was aggressive and came out and attacked the play in front of her. I think she really made some progress in the net today.”
The Ducks will stay in the Bay Area in preparation of their Sunday afternoon showdown with California while Stanford will face Oregon State on Sunday.
