BERKELEY, Calif. ? Alex Morgan scored a hat trick to lead No. 19 California to a 5-1 victory over Oregon Sunday at Edwards Stadium.
The Golden Bears jumped to the lead early with two goals in the first two minutes of the game. Brianna Bak scored just :55 into the game, while Morgan followed that with the first of her three goals at the 1:59 mark.
"We let in two goals the first two minutes and that really got us into a hole we couldn't get out of," said Oregon coach Tara Erickson. "It was a disappointing effort. Cal is a good team and I give them all the credit, but we have to take some of the blame for letting five goals in."
Morgan also added scores in the 30th and 36th minute.
Jen Stoltenberg got the Ducks got on the scoreboard in the 81st minute with her eighth goal of the season.
"I was glad we kept trying to score and got maybe a little boost for the future when Stoltenberg got one," said Erickson, who also noted senior Nicole Dobrzynski, playing in her 70th career game, for her effort at defender.
The loss dropped Oregon to 7-5-1 on the season and 0-2 in Pac-10 play. The Bears improved to 9-3 (2-0).
Cal limited Oregon to five shots, two by Stoltenberg and one each by Teresa Bowns, Allison Newton and Rianna Mansfield.
Cody Miles made seven saves for the Ducks, who played without starting defensive midfielder Kirstie Kuhns, who suffered a leg injury Friday against Stanford.
"That's a really important position for us in terms of directing our attack and really just coordinating everything, so it was very hard to be with out Kirstie today," said Erickson.
NOTES: Stoltenberg's eight goals tie her for sixth on the UO single-season scoring list with Julie Ray (1980), and Chalise Baysa (twice, in 1999 and 2001). Stoltenberg also jumped into a tie for eighth in career points with 25 (9G, 7A), matching Beth Bowler (1998-01). Stoltenberg's nine career goals rank tied for eighth on the UO list with five other players. Newton (Eugene, Ore.) moved into a tie with Kristi Morris (1996-99) for seventh in career games started with 72.
