Soccer Civil War Ends in Scoreless Draw
10/18/08 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. ? In Oregon's first Pac-10 home game of the 2008 season freshman goal keeper Cody Miles made five saves and did not surrender a goal to Oregon State but the Ducks did not crack the scoreboard either and the Civil War ended in a scoreless draw on Friday night, 0-0, at Pape' Field.
Oregon's record is now 7-5-2 (0-2-1 Pac-10) after the draw while Oregon State's mark sits at 5-6-2 (0-2-1).
The action was almost perfectly balanced under the lights, with both teams registering 11 shots and Oregon holding a slight 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. Neither team had many chances while both keepers neutralized any legitimate scoring threats.
Miles notched her fourth shutout of the season while OSU goalie Colleen Boyd made three saves on the way to her second clean sheet.
The game got rough as play went on a 25 total fouls were called in addition to three yellow cards.
"We battled out there and it was a physical game,” said Oregon head coach Tara Erickson. “There were definitely some tackles thrown out there and some cards issued. I just expected a little bit more conviction at the end of it all and not just in goal scoring. We looked a little out of sorts tonight."
Oregon's best chance came early in the second half when Jen Stoltenberg took the ball on a breakaway and outran an Oregon State defender to the top corner of the box but Boyd came away from the net and challenged the play. Stoltenberg tried to slip the ball past the keeper and make another touch on the ball but Boyd blocked the ball into the center of the field and toward her defense.
Oregon has Sunday off before hosting No. 24 Washington State at 7 p.m. on Friday and Washington at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Pape' Field.
Notes: Oregon's Allison Newton missed the first game of her career on Friday night due to a knee injury ... The senior midfielder had previously made 72 consecutive starts, playing in every single game of her career ... The scoreless draw was the first for the Ducks this season but hardly the first in their series with Oregon State ... In both of the previous game played against the Beavers, the game went into overtime (Oregon 2-1 win in 2006, 2-2 draw in 2007).
