Stoltenberg, Ducks Defeat Arizona State 1-0
11/01/08 | Women's Soccer
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Jen Stoltenberg's goal in the first minute of play led the Oregon women's soccer team to its first conference win on Friday night at Arizona State, 1-0.
Just 24 seconds into the game, Jen Stoltenberg took the ball on a breakaway and rifled a shot past ASU keeper Brianna Silvestri to the far post. Following the Arizona State kick-off Darcie Gardner collected the ball and passed it over to Nicole Dobrzynski who sailed a long clearing pass over the top of the Sun Devils' midfield and defense which Stoltenberg was able to run down and take to the goal.
“It was a great start but they battled really hard,” said head coach Tara Erickson. “They are very physical but we were just as gritty and tough tonight.”
Arizona State's offense keyed on corner kicks and the Sun Devils had 11 to the Ducks three on Friday night. On multiple occasions Arizona State shots following corner kicks were cleared by the Ducks just inches away from the goal line to preserve the shutout. On one play Stoltenberg leaped high into the air and headed a shot away from the net that was certainly a goal before the Mission Viejo, Calif., native made the incredible athletic play.
Freshman keeper Cody Miles made three saves and secured her second Pac-10 shutout, but first on the winning end. Miles and the Ducks' defense blanked Oregon State but settled for a scoreless draw. Against the Sun Devils Stoltenberg tacked on her ninth goal of the season to make sure the Oregon offense could hold up its end of the deal. Miles has five shutouts on the season and the Ducks have seven as a team.
Oregon snapped a six-game winless streak with the victory on Friday night and the Ducks won for just the first time this season when taking less shots than their opponents. Oregon was outshot 14-8 by ASU.
The Ducks will head south to Tuscon, Ariz., tonight in preparation of its Sunday noon contest against the Wildcats. Arizona defeated Oregon State 2-1 on Friday night.
