Stoltenberg Leads Ducks Past Sooners, 2-0
10/03/08 | Women's Soccer
NORMAN, Okla. ? Jen Stoltenberg scored a pair of goals on Friday night against Oklahoma, leading the Ducks to a 2-0 victory over the Sooners at OU's John Crain Field.
Oregon improved to 7-2-1 on the season with the victory while Oklahoma fell to 1-10-0 after the defeat.
“It was a great road win for us,” said Oregon head coach Tara Erickson. “They're record is deceptive because they are very athletic. They came at us hard but we played tough defense and Jen made two really great goals on the other end.”
After a scoreless first half that saw the Ducks out-shoot the Sooners 9-2 and force Oklahoma keeper Lisa Jett to make five saves, Oregon stormed out of the gates in the second frame and capitalized on early opportunities.
Stoltenberg scored her sixth goal of the season less than two minutes into the second half after Teresa Bowns played a perfect pass behind the Oklahoma defense. Stoltenberg used her speed to sprint past a pair of defenders and then dribbled around the keeper before tapping in the breakaway goal from a few feet away.
Just more than six minutes later, the sophomore from Mission Viejo, Calif., was again assisted by Bowns and scored her second goal of the night and seventh on the season. In a similar play to the first goal, Bowns slotted a pass that split two Oklahoma defenders and Stoltenberg ran down the ball toward the far post and, despite being at an awkward angle, used a quick one-time kick to redirect the ball low to the near post and past the Sooner keeper.
Bowns earned her third and fourth assists of the season, giving her 12 in her career.
Freshman keeper Cody Miles has come on strong as of late for the Ducks, tallying her second straight shutout victory against the Sooners. Miles played all 90 minutes of the Ducks 1-0 victory last Sunday against Weber State and played more than 70 minutes of scoreless ball against Portland State on Sept. 19 before being rested in the final minutes.
The Oregon offense was potent as usual, blasting 15 shots with 10 placed on goal. With a final shot advantage of 15-8, the Ducks have taken more shots than their opponents in eight of ten games in 2008.
The Ducks will continue their Sooner State tour on Sunday with a showdown in Stillwater, Okla., against the No. 12-ranked Oklahoma State Cowgirls. Kick-off for Oregon's final non-conference game of the season and third this year against a top-25 team is set for 11 a.m. (PT).
NOTES: Stoltenberg moved into a tie for 10th all-time in program history for career points with 23 ... Bowns' 12 career assists ties her with teammate Allison Newton for second all-time in program history ... Stoltenberg's seven goal this season ties her for ninth most in a single season with Nicole Garbin (2003) and Andrea Valadez (2003) ... Oregon has gone seven straight games without losing (six wins, one draw) which is tied for the third longest unbeaten streak in Oregon soccer history (6-0-1 record from 9/2/2005-10/2/2005).
