LONG BEACH, Calif. ? Teresa Bowns scored her second goal of the game in the 106th minute of the second overtime to catapult the Ducks to a 3-2 victory on Friday afternoon against UC Riverside.
With the game tied 2-2 in the final overtime period, Jen Stoltenberg dribbled down the end line near the Highlander net and fired a shot that was partially blocked by the UC Riverside keeper and started rolling across the front of the open goal. Bowns was inside the box when Stoltenberg shot and sprinted toward the lose ball and tapped it into the back of the net for her first career game-winning goal.
“I was so proud of our attack today,” said head coach Tara Erickson. “I must have jumped off the bench at least five different times thinking we had a goal just to see the ball get saved. Their goal keeper played a great game but we kept doing the right things and pushed the ball forward."
Oregon improved to 4-2-0 this season while UC Riverside fell to 4-3-0 in its 2008 campaign.
Four different Oregon players recorded career-highs in shots taken as the Ducks blasted a whopping 32 total shots in the contest, the second most ever taken in a single game in program history. The team's shot output on Friday against the Highlanders fell just shy of the school-record 39 total shots taken against Portland State in 2001.
UC Riverside managed just eight shots, placing just three on goal. Oregon put 15 of its 32 shots on goal, forcing UC Riverside keeper Brittany Goetz to make 11 saves.
It was the Ducks' first win in the state of California since 2003, a 3-1 win at Sacramento State.
The Ducks struck first with their second straight-goal in the first minute of play. Jessica Goodell added her second goal of the season on a long blast from 30-yards out just seconds after UC Riverside started the game off at midfield. Allison Newton was credited with the assist, her second of the season, after her long crossing pass to the opposite field found Goodell.
“Our first goal of the game was just a fantastic score,” Erickson added. “As soon as the ball left Goodell's foot we all know it was going into the goal.”
The Ducks padded their lead in the 23rd minute when junior forward Teresa Bowns knocked in her second goal of the season. Jen Stoltenberg earned the assist when she sent a long crossing pass to the front of the net from deep in the corner of the field and Bowns was able to leap into the air and use a header to redirect the ball into the back of the net.
But UC Riverside, and particularly sophomore Heidi Garrett, were determined to fight back into the game.
The Highlanders and Garrett put up their first goal of the game just 4:03 after Bowns' score when Garrett, following an Oregon foul, perfectly placed a free kick from just outside of the box past the Duck defense into the net for the score. It was the first shot UC Riverside took in the game.
The Highlanders added the game-tying goal in the 57th minute off of a throw-in. Garrett struck again, this time taking the ball on a throw-in and bending a shot just inside the post from 35-yards out.
“We need to put teams away better as we let them get back into the game," Erickson said. "But I was pleased because we kept fighting.”
The Ducks will play Long Beach State on Sunday afternoon in the squad's first true road-game since the season-opener at No. 6 Portland on Aug. 23. Long Beach State blasted BYU 3-0 in its most recent game to improve to 4-1-1 on the season and received votes in the NSCAA/Adidas coaches poll on Sept. 9.
