For 10 days in 2008, the Olympic spirit will fill Hayward Field, the University of Oregon, the community and the state, as 1,000 athletes compete for the opportunity to represent the United States in Beijing.
From June 27 to July 6, thousands of fans will come to share in the drama, excitement and passion of track and field at the sport's most storied venue. Hayward Field, host of the Olympic Trials in 1972, 1976 and 1980, will once again be in the international spotlight. This compelling competition will be broadcast across the country, and over 1,200 visiting media will cover the meet for newspapers, magazines, and TV stations around the world.
Planning for the Olympic Trials is quickly taking shape, so visit the official website - www.Eugene08.com - for more information.
Outside the stadium, thousands more will have the opportunity to experience the Olympic Trials with related festivals and events at a variety of locations. The Olympic Trials will connect the spirit of great performances in athletics with great performances in art, music and the humanities. Plans for the celebrations connected to the Trials will integrate many of the cultural and outdoor activities that traditionally occur in the Eugene/Springfield area during the summer.
The Eugene '08 Local Organizing Committee is composed of leaders in athletics, the University of Oregon administration, and the local community. The committee created a vision for the 2008 Olympic Trials and is tasked with ensuring that the vision is fulfilled. The vision is simple: to make this the greatest Olympic Trials ever staged—the best for the athletes, the best for the coaches, the best for the officials, the best for the media, and the best for the spectators.
The commitment to track and field of Eugene '08, the University of Oregon, and the local community is a commitment to much more than just the 2008 Olympic Trials. It is a commitment to support the sport at all levels and to elevate track and field nationally and internationally.
