Ducks Drop Opener To Wolfpack

Oregon fell behind early and ultimately lost a 4-1 decision to North Carolina State on Friday at Papé Field.
EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon soccer team fell behind early before notching its first goal of the 2017 season in a 4-1 loss to North Carolina State on Friday before 602 fans at Papé Field.
How It Happened: The Ducks (0-1) had a chance to open the scoring in the fifth minute when Kyra Fawcett looked to touch home a crossing pass, but a defender was able to deflect the ball over the goal before it reached Fawcett. The game didn't remain scoreless for long, as Paige Griffiths gave North Carolina State a 1-0 lead a minute later.
The Wolfpack (1-0) made it a two-goal lead in the 26th minute when Kristina Schuster found the back of the net. The lead was 3-0 before the Ducks got on the board, in the 67th minute when Brianne Parsons finished a low cross on assists from Mia Costa and Sofia Chambers. North Carolina State closed out the scoring in the 85th minute.
Who Stood Out: Costa and Jessica Yu led the Ducks with two shots each. Halla Hinriksdottir made one save, laying out to keep it a one-goal game during the 18th minute.
What It Means: The Ducks got a taste of what competition will be like when the grueling Pac-12 slate begins, opening against a team that returned 11 starters after making an NCAA Sweet Sixteen run last fall.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"We've got to clean up a few things defensively. We allowed three shots in the first half, and two goals. We're not gonna win if we give up soft goals."
"The good news is, it's not how you start, it's how you finish. But we have to focus, improve and get our confidence back."
Up Next: The Ducks won't have to dwell on the opener long, as they return to action Sunday at Papé Field against Kansas State (1 p.m. PT, Pac-12 Live Stream).
