Bench Sparks Last-Minute Win
09/01/17 | Women's Soccer
BOISE, Idaho — Coach Kat Mertz said the bench would determine if the Ducks would be successful or not this weekend.
On cue, Kyra Fawcett, the last player off the bench for Oregon on Friday, scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute to lift the Ducks to a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma in the opening game of the Boise State Tournament.
How It Happened: After pressuring the Sooner defense much of the second half, the Ducks (2-1) finally broke through when Alyssa Hinojosa passed the ball to the right corner to a running Miranda Schultz – another second-half substitute – who one-timed a perfect cross to Fawcett at the far post.
The junior from Bountiful, Utah, who entered the game in the 81st minute, fired a strike into the back of the net from five yards out.
Prior to Fawcett's goal, the Ducks were stymied on a trio of point-blank chances earlier in the second half. In the 53rd minute, Jazmin Jackmon sent a header in past the OU keeper only to have a defender clear the ball away. In the 59th minute, Emma Eddy's point-blank shot was blocked by a Sooner defender. The same thing happened to Taylor Kuroda in the 80th minute.
In the first half, the Ducks pressed out of the opening kickoff and had six shots and a pair of corner kicks in the first 15 minutes, but could not find the net, thanks to solid play on the part of Oklahoma keeper McKinley Crone.
Who Stood Out: Led by Hinojosa, who got her first career assist and first career point on Friday, the Oregon back line turned away Oklahoma's offense, not allowing many dangerous chances. Halle Hinriksdottir made three saves in earning her second consecutive shutout as the Ducks' have held opponents scoreless for the last 186 minutes.
What It Means: Oregon was 3-7-1 in games it was tied at the half in 2016 so getting off to a 1-0 start in that category is promising.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"It was a complete team effort today. Proud of the effort and mentality we showed today in executing the game plan. We thought we could attack the flank space and serve into the box, which is how our game-changers scored the goal."
Junior forward Kyra Fawcett
"The team played really well today and it would have been a shame to not come out of this game with a win. I'm proud of my teammates and couldn't have done it without them."
Notable:. … Shultz recorded the second assist of her career and her first since her freshman season. … 20 of the 23 players on the travel roster played on Friday. … Led by three from freshman Chardonnay Curran, the Ducks outshot Oklahoma 16-7. … Fawcett led Oregon with five goals in 2016. … Jackmon made her first start of the season.
Up Next: Oregon wraps up the Boise State Tournament by facing Cal Poly on Sunday (10 a.m., Mountain West Network live stream) at the Boas Soccer Complex.
