Ducks Push No. 9 UCLA Before Falling, 2-1
10/18/18 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES — Oregon pushed No. 9 UCLA for a full 90 minutes Thursday before falling 2-1 at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.
The Bruins needed a score on a set piece – the third of three straight free kicks awarded to UCLA deep in Oregon territory – to escape with the win.
How It Happened:
The Ducks (7-7-1, 1-6) and Bruins scored goals :21 apart in the opening minutes of the game. After Ashley Sanchez dribbled through a couple of UO defenders and found the net to put the Bruins ahead 1-0 in the fifth minute, the Ducks immediately went on the attack on the ensuing kickoff.
Bayley Bruner passed the ball down the left flank to Jazmin Jackmon, and Jackmon's cross was on frame and sailed over UCLA goalkeeper Teagan Micah to the far side of the net. Jackmon's first career goal knotted the game at 1-1 in the sixth minute.
The Bruins (9-3-1, 4-2) then took a 2-1 lead in the 39th minute, finally breaking the Ducks' defense after being awarded three consecutive free kicks deep in the UO zone. On the third restart, Kennedy Faulknor headed in a cross from Sanchez for the game-winner. Three of Oregon's nine first half fouls came during that sequence.
Jackmon had one of the Ducks' best chances to score in the second half when she hit a shot just wide off a corner kick in the 58th minute. Emma Eddy also sent one just over the crossbar in the 82nd minute.
The Ducks played without leading scorer Marissa Everett for the fourth straight match.
Who Stood Out: In addition to scoring her first goal of the season, Jackmon, from Pasadena, Calif., was making plays all over the field. She and Eddy finished with two shots. Halla Hinriksdottir made six saves.
What It Means: The Ducks bounced back from a disappointing 4-1 loss at No. 16 Colorado on Sunday with a much more spirited effort against another ranked team on Thursday.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"It was a great team effort against one of the top teams in the nation. Our goal was to get back to playing "Duck Soccer" and we absolutely did. (Jackmon) and the back line played lights out."
Notable: Oregon's first-half goal halted Micah's five-game scoreless streak. … Bruner's assist was her first of the season and sixth of her career. … Thursday was Oregon's fourth straight match against a 2017 NCAA Tournament team.
Up Next: Oregon plays at No. 2 USC on Sunday (1 p.m., Pac-12 Live Stream).
