Early Goals Lead to Loss at No. 2 USC
10/21/18 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES — No. 2 USC scored three times in the first 22 minutes and went on to defeat Oregon 5-0 Sunday at McAlister Field.
How It Happened:
Penelope Hocking scored USC's first two goals, finding the net in the sixth minute and then again in the 20th minute.
Savannah DeMelo made it 3-0 USC (14-1-1, 7-1) with a score that came just 1:13 after Hocking's second goal.
In the second half, Hocking made it a half trick half with a goal in the 61st minute.
Samantha Bruder capped the scoring for USC with her goal in the 82nd minute.
The Ducks (7-8-1, 1-7) played without leading scorer Marissa Everett for the fifth straight match.
Who Stood Out: Zoe Hasenauer led the Ducks with three shots.
What It Means: After five straight matches against 2017 NCAA Tournament teams, including three straight on the road, the Ducks will have a chance to turn the tables with a three-game home stand to end the 2019 season (Arizona State, Arizona, Oregon State).
Notable: Katelyn Carter came on in relief of Halla Hinriksdottir in goal at halftime and saw her most extensive minutes of the season, allowing two goals and making two saves. Hinriksdottir made five saves in the first half.
Up Next: Oregon returns home to host Arizona State on Thursday (5 p.m., Pac-12 Networks).
