Heartbreaker For Ducks In OT
10/25/18 | Women's Soccer
Oregon led most of the night but Arizona State forced overtime and then scored the game-winner with 20 seconds to play Thursday night.
EUGENE, Ore. — On track most of the night for a victory that might have sparked a late-season surge, the Oregon soccer team instead suffered a heartbreaking defeat Thursday night at Papé Field, falling 2-1 to Arizona State in extra time.
The Ducks (7-9-1) had their dreams of a winning season intact until ASU scored the tying goal in the 69th minute. Then, with just 20 seconds left in extra time, the Sun Devils ended it with the second goal of the game for Marleen Schimmer, three weeks to the day after Oregon's 100th-minute loss to Stanford at home.
"This one is going to take me a minute, to move on (from)," UO coach Kat Mertz said. "… This team is a special team. They feel like they're not getting that lucky bounce, that maybe the soccer gods are against them. But that's why we love this game."
How It Happened: The Ducks struck early when Emma Eddy stuffed in a rebound, after ASU keeper Nikki Panas saved a header by Chardonnay Curran in the third minute. Needing to win their last three games of the regular season — all at home — to finish with a winning record and stoke hopes of an NCAA Tournament bid, it was just the start they needed.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Arizona State predictably increased its pressure, creating a number of scoring chances. The Sun Devils finally broke through when Schimmer made a run up the middle of the field, collected a pass and fired the ball past UO keeper Halla Hinriksdottir to tie the game.
Moments before, Oregon had a chance to go up by two goals, but Bayley Bruner's shot that beat a diving Panas was deflected over the goal by a tip off the foot of defender Angela Boyle. Incredibly, Oregon's Hannah Taylor made a remarkably similar play with five minutes left in regulation, booting away a shot from just in front of the goal line that looked destined for the back of the net.
Five minutes into extra time, Eddy nearly finished her own second goal of the game to win it, but tipped a deflected ball over the crossbar. Instead that honor went to Schimmer with just 20 seconds left, when she collected a ball headed out of the box by a UO defender, made a run to the right post and then fired a shot across the goal just inside the left post.
Who Stood Out: Eddy managed six shots, three of which were on goal, and scored her sixth goal to tie Marissa Everett for the team lead. Everett, who had missed five games due to injury, returned and played 24 minutes, entering late in each half. Curran, Taylor, Sofia Chambers, Jazmin Jackmon, Mia Palmer and Alyssa Hinojosa each played start to finish.
What It Means: Oregon now will look to rally and win Sunday against Arizona and next week in the Civil War to finish with a .500 record.

On having two days to regroup for Arizona
"We've gotta play with nothing to lose. The pride we have for each other, the love we have for each other, you can feel it. That's the hardest part; I'm gutted, for the seniors especially."
Redshirt freshman defender Hannah Taylor
"You take some time for reflection tonight. Then you wake up tomorrow with a focus on Arizona."
Notable: As a team the Ducks attempted a season-high 10 corner kicks. … Thursday's match was NAACP Night at Papé Field, celebrating diversity and cultural awareness. … Prior to first touch, a moment of silence was hold in memory of Lauren McCluskey, a track and field student-athlete from Utah who died in a shooting earlier in the week.
Up Next: The Ducks host Arizona on Sunday (noon, Pac-12 Live Stream).
