Ducks Drop Tough Battle With Cal
10/07/18 | Women's Soccer
Oregon controlled play early and took the lead, but the Ducks missed several chances to add insurance and Cal rallied to a 2-1 win Sunday.
EUGENE, Ore. — The inability to tack on to an early lead cost the Oregon soccer team dearly Sunday, as the Ducks dropped a 2-1 decision to visiting California before 550 fans at Papé Field.
The Ducks (7-5-1, 1-4 Pac-12) carried over some momentum from their gritty overtime loss Thursday to No. 1 Stanford, playing a strong first 20 minutes that featured Bayley Bruner's second goal of the season. But several chances to add on weren't finished, and Cal (5-7-1, 2-3) scored twice in the final 20 minutes to escape with a win.
"This one hurt," UO defender Alyssa Hinojosa said. "We wanted to bounce back from Thursday. We had our minds right; we just fell a little short."

How It Happened: The Ducks dominated the opening minutes, bottling up the Golden Bears and their speedy attacker Abigail Kim, and taking a 1-0 lead on Bruner's goal in the seventh minute. The play began with an entry pass into the offensive zone by Sofia Chambers that Emma Eddy couldn't quite corral. But Eddy pressured the defender who collected the ball off her touch, forcing a turnover that Bruner collected and finished to the top-right corner of the goal.
"Her effort was through the roof," UO coach Kat Mertz said of Bruner, who had four shots to lead the UO attack in the absence of injured leading scorer Marissa Everett. "She put her heart out there, and she never stopped working. I think she's upset because she could have had one or two more, but I'm extremely proud of her."
Bruner created another golden chance a few minutes later, making a cross from the right side that a charging Eden Hardy couldn't quite get a toe on, with Bruner's cross rolling just outside the far post. Later, in the second half, Bruner was one-on-one with the Cal keeper and beat her to the left side, but again the ball trickled just outside the post.

Less than 10 minutes after that second near miss, Emma Westin collected a rebound and finished it for the equalizer in the 74th minute. And less than five minutes after that, Anja Koehler scored off a corner kick to give California the lead.
"It stings," Bruner said. "We came out strong and just couldn't battle it out for the full 90 minutes."

Who Stood Out: Bruner's fifth career goal highlighted an afternoon on which she created four shots, two on goal. Hardy also put two shots on goal. Hinojosa and fellow defender Jazmin Jackmon each played a full 90 minutes, three days after playing every minute of the overtime loss to Stanford that ended in the 100th minute.
What It Means: One week after allowing a Thursday loss at Washington State to affect their effort three days later against UW, the Ducks did a better job of flushing Thursday's overtime loss to the Cardinal. Still, the end result was their fourth defeat in a row, and Oregon will need to work to retain confidence for a road trip this week.

On the missed offensive chances
"In the Pac-12 you can't leave goals on the field, and we left too many goals on the field.
On Oregon's effort three days after the Stanford game
"I didn't think we were sluggish; I didn't think our effort was poor. I just think our execution was off.
Defender Alyssa Hinojosa
On the team's confidence going forward
"We're a good team. We still have games to play, chances to prove ourselves. We're not done yet."
