Ducks open season with back-to-back wins over 2017 NCAA teams
EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon's Marissa Everett scored the lone goal of the match in the 67th minute to lead the Ducks to a 1-0 victory against Clemson Sunday in front of 494 fans at Pape' Field.
The Ducks are 2-0 for the first time since 2011.
How It Happened: Nicole Seaman slipped a pass through the right side of Clemson's defense and Everett went straight for the goal, finally slipping the ball to the right of Tiger goalkeeper Maddie Weber from six yards out.
"I saw Nicole (Seaman) putting in the challenge and I knew she was going to get a toe on it, so I gambled a little bit and started running forward," said Everett. "Luckily, it popped out to me and I was one-on-one with the keeper."
Oregon had an opportunity to take the lead in the 30th minute when Jazmin Jackmon found herself in front of a wide-open Clemson net, but her chip went just wide left.
Who Stood Out: Oregon's defense was stout throughout the game, allowing only one shot on goal that Halla Hinriksdottir saved in the 56th minute. The Ducks also turned away eight corner kicks and several long throw-ins by the Tigers.
What It Means: Not only is Oregon 2-0 for the first time since 2011, but for the first time in program history, the Ducks opened a season with back-to-back wins over NCAA Tournament teams.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"That was fun. Clemson is a good team, and historically they've done well in the ACC. And we've said this before that the two premier conferences in the country are the ACC and the Pac-12. It was a good test. We still need to sharpen up a few things and learn from this."
Senior goalkeeper Halla Hinriksdottir on the spacing of the defense:
"We do like to stretch the field and keep it and try to find those pockets into midfield. That is something we have been working on and it is something that we are definitely going to get better at as the season goes on…I think it is only going to get better from here as far as technical stuff goes like finding inner pockets and finding space."
Notable: Everett has taken only two shots this season and has scored on both. Everett moved up several career lists on Sunday. She's now tied for eighth in goals (12), tied for third in game-winning goals (7) and is eighth in points with 33. Hinriksdottir recorded her 10th career shutout.
Up Next: Oregon travels to Nebraska to play the Cornhuskers on Friday (5 p.m. PT) and Kansas on Sunday (8 a.m. PT).
