Mistakes Cost Ducks at Nebraska
08/24/18 | Women's Soccer
LINCOLN, Neb. — Oregon made two costly mistakes that led to a pair of Nebraska goals as the Ducks fell to the Cornhuskers 2-0 Friday at Barbara Hibner Field.
How It Happened: The Ducks (2-1) went down 1-0 on an own goal in the third minute. Nebraska's Brenna Ochoa sent a cross in from the right corner that deflected off Jazmin Jackmon into Oregon's goal.
The Cornhuskers (2-0-1) took advantage of an Oregon turnover in the 60th minute to take a 2-0 lead. The Ducks were attempting to move the ball forward on a goal kick when Savanah Uveges stole the ball from a pair of Oregon defenders. She then found Natalie Cook for a close-range strike.
Neither team was able to pepper the net. Nebraska attempted seven shots, while Oregon had four.
Who Stood Out: Center backs Alyssa Hinojosa and Hannah Taylor both played all 90 minutes and kept the Nebraska attack at bay aside from the two miscues.
What It Means: Oregon's first loss of the season came against a Nebraska team that now has a pair of quality wins (Oklahoma and Oregon) and a quality tie (BYU). The Ducks still have an opportunity to come away with a quality result on this road trip with a match against No. 18 Kansas on Sunday.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"We made a couple of mistakes that really hurt us tonight and that's how the game of soccer goes sometimes. We need to learn from those mistakes and be ready to play a really good Kansas team on Sunday."
Notable: The Oregon-Nebraska series is tied 1-1.
Up Next: Oregon remains in Lincoln to play No. 18 Kansas on Sunday (8 a.m. PT). The Jayhawks defeated Oregon State 3-0 on Friday.
