Ducks Fall at Utah
10/06/19 | Women's Soccer
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah scored twice in the second half to defeat Oregon 2-0 Sunday at Ute Field.
It was the first time this season that the Ducks (4-3-4, 0-2-1 Pac-12) have been shutout.
How It Happened: Both teams were solid defensively in the first half. Utah (6-3-3, 1-0-2) had five shot attempts to Oregon's five. The Ducks' Zoe Hasenauer was the only player with an attempt on target in the first 45 minutes.
The Utes broke the scoreless tie with a goal by Ireland Dunn in the 64th minute and added an insurance score by Emali Mackinnon in the 76th minute.
After Utah's second score, Oregon had three shots on net that Utah turned away with difficult saves. In the 81st minute, Hasneauer ripped a shot from the left side that goalkeeper Carly Nelson made a diving save on. Just 30 seconds later, a Ute defender cleared Hasenauer's shot attempt off the line to keep the Ducks from scoring. Finally in the 84th minute, Taylor Kuroda fired a shot on the net that Nelson made another diving save on.
Who Stood Out: All three of Hasenauer's shots were on goal.
What It Means: Oregon's modern-era record 13 consecutive match scoring streak, which dated back to last season, came to an end.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"I thought we played well in the first half, but we just didn't create quality choices until late in the second half. We have to find a way to tighten up in the in the back and not give up goals. We're really looking forward to coming home and playing in front of our home crowd."
Notable: Despite being shutout, Oregon's 22 goals in the first 11 games of the season is still the second-best total in the modern era. The 2007 club scored 24 goals in its first 11 games.
Up Next: Oregon hosts its first Pac-12 home game of 2019 Thursday against No. 20 California (7 p.m., Pac-12 Networks).
