Ducks Strike Four Times to Down Vikings
08/30/19 | Women's Soccer
The Ducks (1-1-1) were relentless in their attack, attempting the second-most shots in a single match in program history – 36. Thirteen of those attempts were on net, with three more banging off the post or crossbar.
How It Happened: After Portland State (0-2) struck first in the second minute off an Oregon turnover, the Ducks seized control of the match by scoring four consecutive goals.
Wormdahl collected a long pass into the box from True Dydasco and beat a PSU defender and Viking keeper Teri Walters on the low side to knot the game at 1-1 in the 10th minute. It was the fourth goal of the young season for Wormdahl.
Oregon moved ahead in the 30th minute when Sakura Yoshida fed a corner kick to Mia Palmer, who ripped a long shot from outside the right edge of the penalty box into the net.
Freshman Maya Hahn scored the eventual game-winner just before halftime when she followed up a Chardonnay Curran shot that ricocheted off the cross bar with a one-timer that found the top of the net.
"I was busting my gut to get up the field and then the ball rebounded off the crossbar, I pretty much just ran for it and it went in, and I was pretty stoked," said Hahn.
Zoe Hasenauer wrapped up the scoring for the Ducks when she scored her first career goal off her own deflected shot in the 57th minute.
Who Stood Out: Oregon's forwards and attacking midfielders. The frontline players accounted for 27 of Oregon's 36 shots, including 10 by Hasenauer, a total that was one shy of the school single-game record. Wormdahl and Lilli Rask each attempted four shots while Hahn and Ally Cook each attempted three.
Wormdahl joined some rare company on Friday. She became just the seventh Duck to score in three consecutive games. The sophomore from Eugene joined Jen Stoltenberg (twice), Michele Potestio (twice), Erin Anderson, Nicole Garbin (twice), Emma Eddy and Marissa Everett.
What It Means: Oregon's four goals were the most in a home opener since a 5-1 over UC Riverside in 2007.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"Awesome, really great to get the first win of the season, and playing in Pape' under the lights is always a great feeling for us."
Junior forward Mia Palmer
"It was really exciting and I've been itching to get a goal, and so I'm really happy."
Notable: Oregon's 36 shots on Friday was second in program history only to a 39-shot night versus Portland State in 2001 … Hasenauer's 10 shots was one short of the school record of 11 set by Beth Bowler, also in that 2001 game versus the Vikings … The assists for Dydasco and Yoshida were the first of their Oregon careers.
Up Next: Oregon and Villanova meet for the first time on the pitch Sunday at 5 p.m. at Pape' Field (Pac-12 Live Stream).
