BOSTON, Mass. – Maddy Elmore broke the Oregon school record in the 3,000 meters Saturday at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. The historically fast December meet also saw Elliott Cook finish as the top collegian in the men's mile with an outing just off his lifetime best. Oregon combined for four top-10 finishes in Boston.
Running in the top section of the 3,000 meters, Elmore crossed the finish line in 8:50.43 to take more than three seconds off the previous record of 9:53.91 set by Jessica Hull in 2019. The Eugene native is the fourth UO woman to dip below nine minutes in the event. Elmore also lowered her own personal best by 21 seconds, resetting her time of 9:11.70 from the BU Valentine Invite last February.
Elmore finished sixth overall in Saturday's race, and fifth among collegiate runners.
In the men's mile, Cook posted a time of 3:55.50 to finish just behind On's Sam Ellis (3:55.36) and was one of seven runners in the race to dip below four minutes. The race was Cook's third sub-4:00 mile of his career and second fastest just trailing his 3:55.34—No. 7 at Oregon—from last February.
Teammates Alex Slenning (4:04.13) and Tomas Palfrey (4:04.42) finished 12th and 14th, respectively, in Saturday's mile field. The performance for Slenning was a five-second lifetime best, replacing a 4:09.67 from the 2020 indoor season.
Klaudia Kazimierska led a trio of top-15 finishes for the UO women in the mile. She was fourth overall with a time of 4:37.41 and was joined in the top 10 by Ella Nelson who crossed in 4:40.60, nearly five seconds clear of her previous best of 4:45.38 from last January's UW Invite in Seattle. In her UO debut and the first indoor meet of her collegiate career, Samantha McDonnell (4:45.05) finished 14th overall.
Notable: Running unattached, transfer Mia Barnett clocked a lifetime best of 9:12.26 at 3,000 meters; she set her previous best of 9:14.28 while with UCLA at the Dr. Sander Invitational last January…in the men's 3K, Sergio Del Barrio ran a lifetime best of 8:07.48…Del Barrio, McDonnell and Izaiah Steury all made their Oregon debuts Saturday.
