Van Klinken Breaks NCAA Shot Put Record
02/11/23 | Track and Field
Collectively, the Ducks added five new top-10 program marks Saturday.
EUGENE, Ore. – Jorinde Van Klinken broke the NCAA record in the indoor shot put Saturday at the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. Having broken the Oregon school mark twice in as many meets to start the season, Van Klinken unleashed a toss of 19.57m/64-2.5 in the fifth round of the competition to add a second collegiate record to her highly decorated career.
Coupled with Van Klinken's historic measure, the Ducks added five top-10 program marks on day two of a busy, three-meet weekend schedule. Jadyn Mays, also at the Don Kirby meet, joined Van Klinken in the winners' circle Saturday with a victory at 60 meters.
Van Klinken also set a Dutch national record Saturday and currently owns the No. 3 throw in the world this year. She carried a previous indoor best of 19.08m/62-7.25 that she used to win the NCAA title last season. Van Klinken just eclipsed the old record of 19.56m/64-2.25 set by Raven Saunders (Ole Miss) in 2017.
Medford, Ore., native Jaida Ross finished third in Saturday's shot put competition. She got out to a best of 17.74m/58-2.5 to move into sole possession of second place on the Ducks' top-10 list.
Mays, winner of Friday night's 200 meters, completed the sprint sweep with a victory in the 60 meters Saturdays. She was the third-fastest qualifier out of the preliminary round but in the final, raced out to the front and stopped the clock in a season-best time of 7.15 to secure the win. Run at altitude, Mays' time adjusts to 7.17 for NCAA qualifying.
Freshman and Portland native Lily Jones ran a season best of 7.35 to finished sixth in the final.
Already a member of the Ducks' sub-four club, Elliott Cook took more than three seconds off his lifetime best in the mile with a 3:55.34 performance at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational. Cook is now the No. 7 all-time performer in program history. He took the top spot in section two and was 10th overall in the loaded field.
Cook entered the weekend with a best of 3:59.02 from last season's Razorback Invitational. The Powell, Ohio, native has also run 1:46.93 over 800 meters this season, a personal-best showing at the UW Invite (Jan. 28).
Aaliyah McCormick continued the strong start to her freshman campaign with a lifetime best of 8.01 to finish second in the 60-meter hurdles. With that time, she moves into a tie for second on the UO top-10 list with Alaysha Johnson (2017). The top-four spots in Saturday's final were occupied by Pac-12 runners with McCormick out-leaning Talie Bonds of Arizona—8.003 to 8.007—and just missing a sub-eight race.
Like Mays' 60-meter time, McCormick's time will be adjusted to 8.03 for qualifying purposes.
The Ducks also got a top-10 program performance from sophomore Shaniya Hall in the 400 meters. In the first indoor 400 of her UO career, Hall registered a time of 53.30 to win her section and finish third overall. The time makes the Glen Burnie, Md., native the No. 9 performer in Oregon history. This year, Hall has already established bests of 7.45 at 60 meters and 23.78 in the 200.
Ella Clayton was fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 53.81, also an indoor personal best.
In Seattle at the Husky Classic, sophomore Ella Nelson led the Ducks with a top-10 finish at 800 meters. She posted a time of 2:06.98 in section five of six, setting a new indoor best. Nelson came into the day with a time of 2:09.80 from two weeks ago at the UW Invitational (Jan. 28).
