Ducks Fall in the Desert
03/24/23 | Women's Lacrosse
EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon once again could not dig itself out of an early hole in its 12-9 loss to Arizona State.
After falling behind 4-0, Oregon (3-5) found moments of brilliance throughout Friday's game but could not find a lead and take control of the contest.
"We had great fight throughout the game," said head coach Chelsea Hoffmann following the game. "It was awesome seeing some younger players make plays. The game came down to the little things and finishing our shots."
How it Happened: Arizona State (2-5) controlled play throughout the entire first quarter, scoring all four goals and holding the Ducks scoreless.
Oregon was able to recover, scoring five goals during the second period and bringing the game within one before the Sun Devils made the score 8-5 heading into the break. Alyssa Wright kicked off the scoring for the Ducks with a goal from free position less than a minute into the quarter. After Arizona State scored back-to-back goals in response, Oregon rattled off four consecutive goals from several contributors. In that run, freshman Jenae Sperling found the back of the net for the first goal of her career.
The Ducks came out firing with the first three goals to open the second half. Morgan McCarthy scored the first goal of the run after pushing the pace on the fast break. After Oregon tied the game at 8-8, Arizona State responded to close out the third period and make it a 10-8 game.
The intensity increased throughout the fourth quarter as tension mounted in the closing minutes. Gabby Cleveland scored her second of the game on an empty net after pressuring the ASU goalkeeper and forcing a turnover. Arizona State answered with a crucial goal with under five minutes to play that iced the game in favor of the Sun Devils.
Notable: Cleveland extended her multiple point streak to six games with a pair of goals … McCarthy raised her goal-scoring streak to 19 games in her 30th career game with a goal… Eight different Ducks scored a goal in Friday's contest ... Logan Gierke started her 60th career game for Oregon.
Up Next: The Ducks continue their first conference with a stop in Los Angeles to take on USC (12 p.m. PST, Pac-12 Los Angeles).
